Description A new sight for us this year....baby turkeys

Normally our hills have too little ground covering for sheltering the chicks so we don't see them until they are almost grown, but this year with all the St. John's Wort we're seeing them more often

I've been hearing them calling down in the valley for the last week or so, and have seen a couple male in full flirting floof of feathers...strutting their stuff for a group of not terribly interested females so babies are coming

We see them quite often out in the farm fields around here,
but never very close up!

they like to scratch around in the cut weeds by our house - the weeds beyond our fire perimeter are pretty thick, lol, so they take the easy path...and then walk up the driveway!!

I miss our turkeys

They would roost in tree about a 100 yards off the back pouch when we were in San Angelo.

after America was discovered, they did not know it was a new continent and so some thought they were in India,
and others in Cathay (China) and other places... (how about a very nice name: Cipangu was the name for Japan.)

in some parts of Europe, the bird was thought to come from Turkey, and the french thought it came from India: in french, "d'inde" means "from India";
the spelling eventually changed from "d'inde" to "dinde".

so, the way i wrote my comment was a joke: they're walking, but not from Turkey and they're not from India.

have a super day my friend.

I think I like this shot the best, Ruth!
I've seen many a wild turkey adult in my life ...but, I'm not sure I've ever seen any chicks

I loved watching them go up the driveway - we've seen them a couple times since then but never with a camera in reach... Previously we've seen them up the road about a half mile away but this is the first year we've had the babies on our property
