Description Looking up the 300 stairs from down at the Pt Reyes lighthouse

The building materials had to be lowered down the cliffs as the lighthouse had to be low to be seen beneath the omnipresent fog banks....

Oh, I miss this place!
This is a wonderful capture that does a really good job portraying the steepness of the stairway.

I'm glad you want to go back... You should try going in march around spring break. It's the perfect place to watch for migrating whales. I've seen some spectacular stuff out there during that time.

I've watched whales down in the Santa Barbara Channel - always a magnificent experience I'd love sitting in the cafeteria of the Jr. College (where I went eons ago) during the late winter storms watching them The last time I got to see them was July 2007 when we were out in the Channel with the local Santa Barbara Sea Center Aquarium crew (my daughter and I were volunteers there for four years) we had several come almost right next to the boat

I'll put this on my calendar for next spring - I bet all the bush lupine and other flowers in bloom will be wonderful! ( I gathered a handful or so of the seed pods ) and I saw my favorite grass - the rattlesnake grass - along the bluffs too

That sounds like an awesome Jr. College experience!

It's just gorgeous down there in March.. I have some places for you to explore if you're willing to take the time to. I don't know if I'll have the pleasure of being down there next spring, but hopefully I will. And I promise I'll never tell

My daughter and I are always up for adventure But as we're east of Sacramento off Hwy 50 in the foothills (about an hour away from South Shore Lake Tahoe) it's a minimum three hour drive to almost anywhere but we can do that for a day trip...We want to go to Julia Phyfer Burns State Park on Big Sur sometime (there's a wonderful waterfall that drops on to the beach/ocean) but that's about 5 hours away so we'll have to plan an overnight for that...

Let me know when/if you head down and maybe we could meet up! We've met several dA'ers that way and always have a great time.

Wow. That sounds like fun to have to drive three hours to get anywhere. But none-the-less, day trips are always fun.
I've never heard of the Julia Phyfer Burns State Park on Big Sur. But it sounds like somewhere I'll have to hit when I get the chance to. Have fun on that 5 hour drive though
If you're up to exploring more of Point Reyes, I'll point you to more than a few places, all amazing for photography

I'll be sure to do that. I've never actually met any DA'ers (very clever name, might I add), so maybe you'll be the first

[link] here's someone's scrap of the view I want to see and here's the link to the state park [link] (wooops spelled it wrong)

and we really don't have to drive three hours to get anywhere - Tahoe is about an hour and Sacramento is less than one...but Yosemite is about 3 and so is San Francisco

yes, yes, yes!! for Point Reyes tips!!!

When my family moved from southern CA (the Ojai Valley, near Ventura and Santa Barbara) three and a half years ago we came for my husband's family (his father had just begun the slide into Alzheimers) and we knew absolutely NO one...so I had to bite my natural shyness and as I saw photos of our new home area I contacted the photographers and met up has become my best friend up here!

Hello, I'm sorry it's taken me so long. But I have a list of places that you and your daughter should consider hitting in Point Reyes.

-Bear Valley Trail (it's one main trail that's connected to a huge network of trails (talk to the park service for more info about them).. but the actual main trail (bear valley) is about 8 miles long, and just gorgeous.)
-Abbot's Lagon (Wonderful little hike ending in a beach-like area with sand-dunes... I've even seen a golden eagle flying around here!)
-Limantour Beach (Beautiful)
-Mcclures beach ( A hangout point for elk (around the trail), and a lovely (but a little steep) walk to a gorgeous beach surrounded by cliffs)
-Tomales Point Trail (Also, another prime point for seeing elk, it's about 5 mile easy hike)

For more info on these places, just look them up.
That's what I'll start you with, and it should keep you busy for quite awhile. Tell me what you think! I adore and miss Point Reyes.

Oh! That looks just beautiful! I'm most definitely going to add that to places to hit when I get the chance!

Haha, well, sometimes a one hour can feel like a three Lol.

Alright. Give me a few days to gather up all of my info. (I've been to many, many places in Point Reyes) and I'll note you with a list of locations to hit. Keep in mind though that I've only ever been there in the spring, never in the fall, so who knows what it will be like.

That must have been hard, as life can put us in positions like that. Sometimes, we have to deal with uncomfortableness and find out ways to meet people.

Oh, and because a part of me loves good food, check out The Station House & Osteria Stellina are both great places to eat in Point Reyes.

LOL, yeah, plus there was a close to a mile walk to get from the parking lot to the top of the stairs Going down we noticed these fenced off benches and wondered what they were for...discovered their use on the way up not that WE needed them

thats funny. When we went back to my hometown we walked up to the church on a hill about 2 miles up and they have prayer booths on the way up but no benches. I guess you pray to make it up to the top.
