Description UPDATE: I have added meanings to over twenty names, and I have also added spaces for races and places (geez, those words all rhyme, don't they?). Warning: This is A LOT bigger and more complete than the previous edition. I hope you find this piece interesting, and if you have any naming sites, dictionary sites, etc. please send me the links so that I may one day finish this list!

NOTE: Please help me find the meanings behind these names and help this piece become complete!

If I'm missing any names, please let me know! I think I've covered most of them, but there are tons of Zelda characters, so I might have missed a few here or there.

This, for some reason or other, did not work out as a text file. Which is why I hate posting any kind of literature or text on Deviant. It's so damn difficult. I'm sticking to ff.net for this kind of stuff.

Anyways, as promised, here are the names of most of the Zelda characters, and the meanings behind those names.

There's this Hylian name generator online, you type your name and it makes it Hylian. xD (Mine's Zelda ) [link] find out what it means in the list above.
And this is very helpful! Good job at working on it!

Eldin and Lanayru are plays off of Din and Nayru's names. Faron and Ordona are both a play off of Farore. (So so I read in an interview)

Volvagia is missing. I'd help give the meaning for the name, but unfortunately I can't find one other than "Vol" being french for "Flying". But it's Japanese name is Varujia. So... P:

Anyways this is neat and good luck!

I feel proud that Link's name is Irish for "blade", 'cause my name is Irish, too, and I'm Irish. -pride- ^_^

This is cool! You must've worked hard to get these meanings. Good job!

(BTW, my name means "great sorrow" or "melancholy" in Irish. Figure it out if you want to. >D)

Thank you!
I actually adore the Pun-names, especially Tatl and Tael. It gives the series a sort of light-heartedness that is beginning to slowly slip away from the Zelda franchise.

I'm pretty sure Kafei is just a play on words for "Cafe" which means coffee in French. XDXD;;;

I'm not sure, though.

You missed some characters. Niko, the "bottom rung" of the Tetra's pirate crew. Dark Link. Biggoron. Great deku tree. And Venus, queen of fairies. Hope that will add to the list!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kayari-of-Midnight In reply to Birdseednerd [2008-01-12 01:44:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! That's really a big help! Although I'm going to have to say that "Dark Link" and "Great Deku Tree" aren't really names that can be added. Link is a name, and the "Dark" is just a title...and "Great Deku" is simply a title as well. I'll add Niko and Venus when I can though

Birdseednerd In reply to Kayari-of-Midnight [2008-01-12 01:49:36 +0000 UTC]

Your welcome! Yeah, the title thing got me thinking," should I add it? I'll see what happens." I'm glad I helped out!

Cool little project you have going on here.

Hmh, I'm Polish and I never ever heard "Barnes", "Ruto", "Laruto" or "Rutela" used. o__O I and my bro laughed while reading it, sorry for that *but I still think it's somehow funny...*
But in Polish mythology is "The Morning Star" called Zora X'D

Hmmh, some meaning are very interesting, like... Link. Or Ganondorf. Good work with it, sorry I'm no help. I hope You'll find all the meanings on the list one day. ^_^

Yeah, I always thought that Link fit him perfectly since he was the one chosen to wield the legendary Blade of Evil's Bane (Master Sword). Irish is awesome! I'm not Irish myself, but I love Irish music and names and the like. It's so interesting to me, same with Japanese culture.

Kayari-of-Midnight In reply to art-boy3 [2007-10-20 01:00:21 +0000 UTC]

Um...I really like Celtic Woman and Enya...and a bunch of other stuff that I can't really remember the name of. I really, really like the fiddle and when it's used in music and...I just really enjoy the Irish style.
Dunno if Celtic and Irish are the same, I just always assumed they were...call me ignorant if I'm wrong.
