While Hotaru acts mature and tough to others and towards her family she sometimes goes to her secret place in waterfall and cry her pain away, as a child she didn't knew her mother so when her father mentions she reminds him of her or she sometimes acts like her she would sometimes gets thoughts on " What if I wasn't born would she still be alive? " so whenever she gets those thoughts or too stressed from school she goes to her secret place and let it all out. While she complains or cry she hold tight to her necklaces and hoping her mother or someone can hear her. In her secret place there's only one echo flower for her to listen, while she doesn't want anyone to see her crying she's fine if someone hears her but that only happens if they manage to find her secret place.
