It's perspective. You're taking it too personally. We aren't robots that make claims with 100% accuracy, nor should we be. If I'm smiling, you can assume I'm happy. But there can be a million other reasons why I'm smiling! Smug, can be perspective too. Maybe what she is, is more shy or friendly, but first impressions can mean a lot and impact what you feel or say about someone.
Either way, he meant well. 
She looks great, you should be proud of it, and don't let anyone make you think otherwise!
