Description Hey guys, sorry I haven't update in a while. Been really insanely busy with uni work and part-time job and stuff ....so i haven't really been painting anything much in the past few months.

This is somewhat inspired by =PaleMajesty 's skin practice piece. If any of you have known me from my old account you would know that I used to really love painting dark, very desaturated paintings. Then I moved on to painting mostly with really rich, deep, intense colours and found myself addicted to it , and now i'm scared of painting desaturated stuff again because I don't want my paintings to look 'dull' and washed out. So this is pretty much an exercise in trying to paint something fairly desaturated but at the same time tried not to be too grey

3 hours in PS CS3 (i originally intended it to be an hour's speedpainting D
I usually don't save steps for paintings this quick but i got two [link]

All of your work is gorgeous--I don't know why this one is so appealing to me, but it is. Perhaps it is the expression.

In any case, wonderful work.

Oh and I thought it was a woman (face) but... you have a male body.. and I was just reading some other comments to see if they had mentioned it.... and they did and you said it' a male...

I think it's abit feminine for a male but.. still a very nice painting Really love the pose

Kay, this is lovely!
I know it is just an excercise, so i won't mention unfinished.... but the partsthat are refined are gorgeous! I love the skintones in the hand, especially. Lovely work, you shouldn't be afraid of it looking washed out, it looks gorgeous!

thank you Coty! I know that it could do with some tweaking to make it look more 'complete' but to be honest I don't really have any intentions of touching this again, ehheh. I want to move on to something else. for you!

Hey! I know how you feel..I used to de-saturate (I think) and now I'm moving to rich colours and high/contrast...I'm totally scared of doing pale and washed out images again...

but this turned out beautifully. I think that the fact that you've improved LOADS at skin tones/depth makes it harder for this sort of thing to look washed out. Oh btw! I never thought your old stuff was washed out - I thought it was great, dark, and it fitted gothicky.

Beautiful soft picture, by the way!

I like desat!

Like Andy said the colours on the hands (the handpalm is a bit thick though) are really nice, so is the face

This looks great ,so this is what you've been doing all this time since your last piece? Me I've been homework watchin BBC shows.... haven't painted anything.. I like that focus and detail in certain areas and the fuzziness in the others. There's this one style i'm trying to think of that the Italians went through after the Renassiance where they weren't so particular about the anatomy and they actuallly elongated limbs.

Did you use refs ? The character (male or female?) just looks so real to me . Can't believe it just took you 3 hours !!!
I don't know what you think, but desaturation is just what I want to follow now, as it always gives the scene more reality (something like ~navate 's style). But of course, nothing is good when it's overdone .

KaynessArt In reply to Insane-eyeball [2007-12-06 11:05:39 +0000 UTC]

indeed I did! [link]
I want to experiment with more colour themes and subjects. Right now I'm working on something quite dominant in yellow colour(my most hated colour!) hehe. Perhaps I will do something less saturated in the future, but then again it all depends on the mood I want to convey
