I Was Gonna Be Their Father

Chapter 8

Three Weeks Later…

Victor awoke early in the morning after another restless night filled with macabre nightmares of him losing his children. The secret that he had decided to keep was eating him up inside. The nightmare that he had had when he was out alone with the girls was only the first of many to come. They tormented him even during the daytime. He would space out during meals and even when he was trying to work.

He sat up in his bed and pushed the covers down so that they only covered him from the waist down. Adjusting his bed head, he looked to his right and was greeted with an all too happy sight. Tomi, Sam and Cass were all fast asleep. The three humans had slept on a pillow in between him and his wife.

He laid back down and wrapped his arm around the three beings. He looked upon them affectionately.

"You guys are all I have”, he whispered softly, “I can't afford to lose any of you. I just can't. I love you guys too much”, he whispered.

"I think that they are more than aware of that babe", stated a voice from across the bed. Eskra had woken up and had been watching her husband's little display.

Victor sighed.

“This secret is destroying you”, said Eskra, running her hand across her husband’s five o’clock shadow, “You need to tell them about this."

"I hear you. I know that I will have to tell them at some point but.... not now. It's too early”, he replied.

"Whatever you say. But don't say I didn't warn you when they start asking about why their father keeps switching off and having restless nights”.

Victor let out a soft chuckle at Eskra's remark. She was right but he would never tell her that.

Unknown to Victor however, Sam had noticed his father's distress. Unlike his mother, he had actually agreed with what his father had done. He had lived in the shadow of his giant parents alone for twenty years. As much as he was grateful to them for everything that they did and he loved them more than anything, being the only human living with two giant parents was not an easy life. Telling his two new sisters about his dad's "powers" would basically be the same as chasing them away.

He had already grown to love their company and he was not willing to give it up. At the same time, the secrecy was depleting his father's sanity. There had to be some sort of middle ground that they could reach. Maybe if he was careful about it, he could hint at the fact that his father was not exactly normal.

Unfortunately for the strange family, Cass and Tomi had been making some observations about their family, Tomi most especially. As much as Tomi had accepted her new family, she was still very sceptical of their intentions.

On top of that, the mannerisms of the two giants were very strange. Victor would bathe several times during the day. When Tomi had asked him about why he had to do it, he had given her a vague answer.

“I have a condition that requires me to keep extremely clean”, he had said dismissively. At first she was under the impression that it was probably a sensitive topic for him to discuss, but then she realised that even if it was a serious condition, a good parent would at least tell their adult children about it. It did not help that she had noticed her parents’ abnormal strength. Her mother would singlehandedly deal with arsonists without any police intervention and her father would rip trees apart effortlessly.

Sam seemed to act like it was completely normal for them to be like that so she felt like discussing it with him would not help ease her mind. Luckily, whilst Victor and Eskra had been discussing his feelings, Tomi was fast asleep. If not, she would have benefited from the little conversation.

Not too long after he had recovered from his nightmare, Victor got out of bed to get ready for the day. Eskra shook her head as he went into the shower.

“He is just being cautious mum”, said a small voice from below. Eskra looked down to be met by the small face of her beloved son Sam.

“I know darling, but…”

“I understand your point of view mum, but I also think that dad makes a great point”, he said as he climbed onto his mother’s knee.

“Well it can’t be a secret forever. The girls are not stupid. They are very observant, especially Tomi. Do you know how many times I have seen her spying on your father and me? She can already see that we are not exactly a normal couple.”

“Damn it, Tomi”, thought Sam. Victor had told him that he really had to convince her to stay with them. Clearly his persuasion was not enough and Tomi was still not sold on being here.

“I did not know that”, I said as I sat down, “I was considering that maybe I should maybe make some hints towards the truth.”

“So you are going to tell them?”

“Yes but not outright. I am going to ease them into it”, I said with a smirk.

“I think that is the best route at this point”, agreed Eskra before she gently pat Sam on the head.

“The two of you do realise that I can hear you, right?” said a deep, tired and slightly annoyed voice.

Sam paled as he turned around to see his giant towel-clad father glaring down at them.

“Nice to know that my family is conspiring against me”, he said, sarcasm dripping from his voice.

“Conspiring is an exaggeration, Victor”, my mother said whilst laying her hand out for Sam to climb on. She had probably sensed his discomfort from being discovered gossiping about his father.

“You two have just refused to trust my judgement”, Victor said accusingly “I know what I am doing.”

“No you do not. You are already sabotaging the frail relationship that we have with our daughters by choosing not to trust them with our secret”, snapped Eskra as she placed Sam on a shelf far away from Victor.

“Whether you like it or not, the girls are not just going to accept that their adoptive parents are disgusting freaks”, argued Victor, his veins bulging with the bioweapon.

“So? Children do not always love what their parents do or say. They may be sceptical at first, but that does not mean that they could never get used to it or grow to accept it”, she argued back.

“They are not children! They are adults! Once adults make up their minds about something, it is very hard for them to just change their opinions”, he yelled as he got dressed.

“They have been alone for so long Victor. Do you really think that they will reject the closest people they have to family just like that?”

Victor froze. He had never considered that little detail. The little bit of humanity that remained in him managed to overpower the bioweapon for that one moment. He breathed a sigh of defeat and decided not to answer her question.

“And of course, you say nothing even though you have been proven wrong,” mumbled Eskra, crossing her arms across her chest. He kept silent anyway.

“Please let me tell them Dad”, said Sam, finally finding the confidence to speak up, “It will be for the better I promise that...”

“You will say absolutely nothing to them”, interrupted Victor, his eyes turning black. “If anyone has to say anything to them, it will be me.”

“Obviously! Because you want nothing more than to pour your heart out to our daughters”, snarled Eskra just before she shoved Victor aside and left the room.

Sam grabbed onto part of the shelf as his mothers’ march had shaken the ground and he risked falling off. Once the vibrating settled, Sam looked up and grimaced as he saw that his mother’s anger had been so great that she had left traces of the bioweapon in her tracks.

Victor turned around to see Sam glaring at him.

“So you are going to be angry with me as well”, asked Victor as he carefully walked over to the shelf where his slightly shaken son lay helpless.

“What do you think?” spat Sam through gritted teeth. “Mother and I are trying to make you understand that your reluctance is going to hurt this fragile new family. I understand your concern but this makes no sense. We try to reason with you but all you do is get mad at mum and ignore me. What are you even afraid of?!”

“Everything! I am afraid that they will run off and tell the police. I am afraid that they will just up and leave and that we will never hear from them again! I am afraid that…”

“Dad! Is everything alright?” asked a small voice near the door. Victor froze in horror as he turned around and saw a very worried Cass looking up at him. “Mum, seemed really mad!”

Victor gave Sam one last death glare before he turned to address Cass, warning him of the consequences if he dared tried to speak up about the matter.

“Mum and I had a bit of an argument”, he said as he walked over to the tiny beauty. Cass quirked an eyebrow at Victor’s explanation. She scanned the room for hints as to what they might have been arguing about. Her curiosity was rewarded by the giant sludgy footprints that were leaving the room.

“I would be mad too if my husband’s antics ruined my floor”, she scolded as she pointed at the ugly stains on the floor.

Victor was confused by what she meant but his eyes lit up on realisation that Cass had already found an excuse for him to use.

“Yes, she was very cross with me after getting her floor damaged. I promised her that I would help sort out the mess though”, he explained.

Cass smiled as she shook her head at her dad’s goofiness. “That is the least that you could do for her to be honest”, she said as she caressed her giant dad’s nose.

Victor placed a soft kiss on her head before gently picking her up and taking her out of the room to get some cleaning products.

Neither of them saw that Victor had left Sam on the shelf where he could not get down. Sam stomped his feet in rage and started punching the wall.

Once again, his pathetic dad had covered up the situation and continued to leave his sisters in the dark about his true self.
