My Journey

Chapter 4

More months passed and things had not worked out for Mitch at all. His plans, which included robbing people and selling drugs, had all been dashed to bits when he and a couple of the other older boys had been arrested for an armed robbery attempt. They all had mug shots now, and a vast majority of the community that they lived in now recognised them as nothing but a bunch of thieving human orphans.

To make matters worse, Mitch had gotten very badly injured during an altercation that he had had with the police, so when he went to school the following week everyone knew what had happened and gave him dirty looks as he went about his days. Miss Myers had even gone so far as to stop giving them pocket money in general, saying that they didn’t deserve them.

This is not what he wanted. When he thought about getting money, he expected to have been feared after their first robbery, but now he was even more of an outcast than before. He wanted to feel like he had some kind of power outside the orphanage but it looked like that could only be a dream. These thoughts were at the forefront of his mind and they made him act more and more like a bitter jerk with each passing day. Soon, the older boys that had been caught with him shunned him and stopped talking to him. They didn’t feel like getting in trouble again.

However, there was something else that added fuel to the fire of Mitch’s anger and that thing, that person was Jemma. Every morning, he would see her run out early to tend to the needs of the crazy job she was doing. Working in a giant’s house was something that Mitch dreaded, hence why he turned to crime. So, seeing Jemma come back with $20 cash in her hand every evening made him so jealous. Not to mention that people everywhere thought highly of her. It annoyed Mitch to the core. All she was doing was cleaning a table and everybody loved her. Why?

One particular Saturday, everyone was out in the common area chatting away. Mitch was there, hating life as he normally did. It didn’t help that everybody else was talking about how diving straight into crime had been a bad idea. As Mitch was trying to tune everyone out, his eyes caught Jemma as she was preparing to leave for her morning work.

Jemma was just tying up her red bandana when she noticed Mitch staring at her.  She rolled her eyes. Ever since his thieving days were over, he had been acting really weird. He would glare at her, talk about her behind her back and even try to turn the other teens against her. She eventually stopped paying attention to his antics. He was just pissed about a terrible plan that was doomed to fail from the beginning. He needed to get over himself, or else everybody was going to hate him.

When Mitch saw her roll her eyes at him, he lost it. He got up and stormed towards her, teeth gritted like an animal. He started yelling at her, so much that the whole room turned to face them.

“What is with you?! Why can’t you just be normal like the rest of us?! Why do you have to be different?! You know if you hadn’t decided to dedicate yourself and your mornings to some rich snobby giant who probably doesn’t give a damn about you, the rest of us could have it better off in this place! You could been there with us at those robberies! You could have helped us somehow and maybe our current situation would be damn different! But no. You had to look out for yourself and forget about the rest of us here! Don’t you dare consider yourself as one of us!”

When Mitch had finished his ultra-rant, Jemma stood there speechless. At first she thought he was rambling but some of what he said had hit her right in the heart. Had she been acting selfish? Had she truly abandoned her housemates to go on without her? Should she have tried to help them? The torn teen didn’t know. She decided to just leave. With tears brimming in her eyes, she took her leave. She didn’t want to be late now, did she?

On arriving at the doc’s house, she wiped her tearstained face and put on the world’s fakest smile. Even after the journey, Mitch’s words were still gnawing on her conscience. She greeted Dr Carmichael in a different way than she usually did.

“Good morning to you, doctor!” she yelled with fake delight, “I’m all set to get to work today”. She hoped that her little demonstration would keep the doctor from suspecting anything concerning her actual mood. In fact, something in her mind was actually making her a bit wary of her giant boss. What if Mitch was right? What if Dr Carmichael just thought of her as little underling that he could easily control? Jemma’s poor heart and brain were awash with a sea of conflict.

When Joshua met Jemma at his door, she was acting a bit odd. She had an overly enthusiastic grin on her face and spoke in a rather high-pitched, super excited tone. He decided to ignore it, but he had a good feeling lodged in the back of his head that she was hiding something from him.

As Jemma did her best to focus on her job, she couldn’t help but replay her little scene with Mitch. At a point, she couldn’t keep it up anymore. She stopped mopping and let a couple of tears fall. Some of them even fell onto the marble counter. She felt like a bad friend. Was she one? She was still torn, so much that she didn’t realise that her employer noticed her sad moment and became concerned.

Joshua had known it. Something had been plaguing dear Jemma and she was trying very hard to conceal it. He got up from his couch where he had been watching television and went over to talk to her.

Jemma noticed her employer approaching her. She noticed her little slip-up and immediately resumed her mopping, cleaning up the tears she had left on the marble table. She really didn’t want to have to talk to him because, at the moment, the conflict in her head was pushing her towards the side that said Dr Carmichael was only pretending to be nice to her.

“Jemima, sweetheart I don’t think tears are a proper marble disinfectant”, stated Joshua, a playful smile on his face. He had seen her rush to cover them, but her eyes were still red, so there was no fooling him either way. “What’s the matter?”

At that point, Jemima didn’t feel like answering that question. She was just plain angry. Mitch was right! Why did she choose this job? It’s not like she could just tell Dr Carmichael to leave her alone or push him away. He was almost a hundred times her size and even if she told him, he would just press on and she wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. Jemma was so angry, that she didn’t even think before she started lashing out at him.

“Why do you even care?!” she yelled, “As far as I’m concerned, I’m just a silly, little human that helps keep your fancy table clean! Admit it, you see me as a lesser being and you only pretended to be nice to me just so you could brag to your fellow doctors about it!”

Joshua couldn’t believe his ears. Who had pumped all this nonsense into Jemma’s head? Why did she immediately just assume that he looked down on her? He felt really offended by her horrible accusation, but he decided not to get too mad, if not he could scare her.

“Now Jemma, if I really didn’t care about you, would I have wasted medical resources on someone that I didn’t feel like helping? Do you feel like I would have carefully treated you if that was the case.?”

Jemma’s smart mouth died the second the doctor started talking to her again. His question caught her off guard and she didn’t know how to react. She must have sounded very rude, but she wasn’t regretting her actions any time soon. She was going to prove to him that she wasn’t just a puny human girl.

“Oh please! It would barely have been a waste! I’m extremely small, you wouldn’t have had to use that much of whatever medicine you gave me! Also, you barely broke a sweat while you were “looking after me”, so that proves absolutely nothing!”

Joshua had had enough. She was being so rude and irritating that he decided that he would no longer entertain her insults. “Well, since you are so adamant on proving that I’m a liar instead of doing your job, then I think it’s time for you to leave!” yelled the gargantuan doctor as he grabbed Jemma and her belongings, opened his front door placed her on the ground and slammed the door.

Jemma was about to continue her ranting when a large hand wrapped itself around her, picking her up forcefully. She wanted to scream but she was on the ground again soon enough when Dr Carmichael put her back down and shut the door in her face. Her ears rang as the force of the giant door had created such a loud bang that it was hurting her ears.

Jemma slowly picked up her little backpack and took her leave. As she walked back to the orphanage, she replayed every word she had said to Dr Carmichael.

“Why did I lash out like that?” thought Jemma, “He only wanted to know what was wrong with me”. Jemma was regretting everything. She had gone from being Dr Carmichael’s trusted and respected employee to a whiny little brat who complained about stupid things. She had turned herself into a female Mitch. She knew she shouldn’t have let that idiot’s words influence her.

It was a long and gruelling walk back, but she managed to make it. On arrival, she went straight to her room, where she dove into the covers of her bed and cried for a bit. Once she was sure all the tears were out, Jemma sat up and started contemplating the future. Really and truly, Jemma knew that her behaviour would probably get her fired and then she’d have to go job hunting again.

That evening as Jemma sat doing her homework, Miss Myers came to the older girls’ room and knocked lightly, asking for her. When Jemma came out to meet her, she was met with the sight of Miss Myers, smiling holding a small human mobile.

“Dr Carmichael called a few minutes ago. He’s going to call back soon so just hang on to the phone till then ok?”

Jemma’s heart rate went from calm to crazy. She wasn’t ready to speak with him. What if he was still mad? Or worse, what if he was calling to fire her? Jemma was so scared, but she took the phone from Miss Myers anyway. Never did she think she would ever be scared of a phone call.

Yeah it's a pretty cool concept I guess, since it's an easy way to get humans and Giants to integrate
