He'd always known where she was. Of course he did; he was her bodyguard, her guardian, her protector. She may not have liked being watched so closely, but leaving her alone was one order he could not obey.

And he'd seen
when that human had torn out her heart.
He hadn't done it on purpose, no; in fact, he was innocent in his naivety, a clueless fool who didn't realise what he was doing (just letting his blue eyes shine unwittingly with an emotion he should have only reserved for her), but Burner would never forgive him. Never.

How could he forgive him, when he had seen her expression when she saw them together? Had seen the realisation dawn on her face, and then witnessed her shattering? However, he was filled with pride when she kept her head up, when she told that foolish human that it was over with the grace and dignity of royalty. But he had also seen beneath that facade and what he saw made him want to burn that filthy human alive.

The only thing that stopped him was when she began to walk away, then started to run, and when the human tried to chase her, but he was faster, yes, because he could not allow him to catch her. He stopped him with a scalding look, his body aflame and smoking, and the fool jarred backwards, shocked, and then grimly turned away.

So he followed her home, knowing that she wasn't aware of him. He saw her collapse to her knees, heard her wails and felt her pain, and without a second thought he was walking towards her.

He was her protector.
He would protect her from this.

He knelt down in front of her and gently took away the hand covering her mouth, holding it firmly in his own. Then, with his other hand, he reached out slowly, his eyes never leaving from her face, from the hot red tears falling from those gorgeous amber eyes. He hooked a finger beneath her chin and gently but firmly pulled her head upwards, making her look at him.

"Princesses do not kneel," he told her, and his rough voice was even deeper with his whisper. "You are strong, Princess, and so powerful and beautiful. Therefore, as your loyal servant, I cannot allow you to kneel for someone like him. He does not deserve it."

That pathetic human
who didn't realise what he had
what was right in front of him
never deserved her.

"So raise your head, Princess, and stop your tears."

He watched as she slowly blinked up at him, her tears slowing and her eyes still shining like a furnace, and asked quietly, "... Because princesses do not waste their tears for something like a broken heart?"

Burner let his hand fall away from her face, although he found that it was reluctant to.

"No," he answered. "Because my duty is to protect you and to adore you from afar. Whenever you cry, it... makes me want to hold you tightly. I can't protect you if my whole body is being used... to cherish you instead."
