I really wanted to draw Jou, then Koji, so this happened.
//scurries away//
My eyes bled cyan everywhere, I'll have you know.
There was enough red to use Jou as a red-cross logo that had blood splatter all over it.
You can spot him a mile away, terrible camouflage unless he plans on hiding in a blood bank.
I'll stop now
Jouichirou and Kojiro both belong to me.
Jou's wings and halo aren't always out because I just hate drawing them and I just get lazy with Koji's. So there.

Okay, to try boosting morale, a better comment:
First of all, I was looking back and forth between the one in the comments and the one here. The one in the comments has a particular mood to it that got lost in this finished version, and I realized what it was. While the designs in the background are beautiful and I love them, they took that away. I can't say what the mood is; what I wouldn't give to just hook up my feelings and just show them to you. Maybe a different kind of designs would have worked better to keep it? I don't know. I love it as is, especially if the change was what you were going for.
I also have to say it...Sorry, Jou looks kinda like a girl if you look at him long enough. And it could be the perspective or his hair, but Kojiro's head looks a little off. I think everything else I would say would be repeating things you've already said.

Okay I'm going to pick this apart, not out of defense but to establish why I did what I did.
The mood; the vibrant colors of the original and the desaturation of this one- one, less color puts a darker tone on it- not always true, but I also wanted a certain feel. Cold, distant, instead of vibrant and full of life. Of course, I hate plain backgrounds, and while no designs puts the focus on them, those silly little swirls are also to throw things awry; sort of like everything that has to do with them.
Or it could be some amateur way of diverting attention, I don't even know anymore.
The perspective; there's a lot wrong with it. For the record, it's Jou's eyes that give him the female look, and in this particular case- the style. Everything softens when it comes to my stupid chibi styles, everyone's a woman, face it. I just can't draw- And I wish I could properly show you exactly what it is with Koji's head. In the sketch, it's actually very right- but this is where it's the colors instead of how it's drawn. I shaded the face wrong, entirely. The way you shade something- especially cell shading- can seriously impact directions in which something appears. Technically, no light should be on his face. At all. And the fact you can't see his feet makes proportions in general look off with him. Trust me, you weren't there to listen to me actually cry over how frustrated I was until giving up.
Again, not defending myself, since.... well I say meaner things about my work and see absolutely zero quality in it to the point I really don't want to draw anything but force myself to. Just being my usual asshole self.

I love the mood you put into this, and all that extra detail. Unfortunately, I wish you could see the 'rainbow' in Koji's wings a little better.

Well considering he's not a fairy, the rainbow isn't always prominent- even in normal lighting, it's all based on how light hits them. Being black, you're not going to get bright vibrant colors, and as I wanted this highly DEsaturated, you don't get such.
I, as you notice, am a fan of monochrome images; colors hurt me so I just don't bother-
