Description #AnatomySeries
---

Drawn from a reference image handed out in class. I chose it because I found the contrast between the serenity in her expression and the intricate details of her insides very interesting to look at. I used charcoal because I wanted to capture the softness of her face, and there's no way in hell I'm gonna work through all those nerves and bones in pencil.

No matter how much I try to diversify, charcoal is still the only medium I can bend to my will. Good thing I like the way it looks.

As with all traditional drawings, it looks far better in person. But I really need to work on my art photography skills. Any tips on how to make it look good with just a cell phone camera? I kinda just took this photo and dialed the levels up to 11...I don't think it looks too good like that though. And somehow the corners are darkened, must be the fantastic lighting job I did I think it looks kind of nice that way though.

---

Tools: Charcoal! Compressed, vine, and pencil. And a kneaded eraser and my fingers of course, can't do a charcoal drawing without those
Size: 18"Γ—24"
Time: ~15 hours...Started this sleep deprived and ended up spending several hours trying to undo all my structural mistakes, and it still ended up looking squished D: I can code without sleep but not draw without sleep

I was cross comparing this with The Atlas of Anatomy, and the muscles, tendons, fat, and nerves are almost en pointe.

Just beautifully, and awesome.

I'm so glad it passes muster!! This was made for an anatomy class but we didn't get into too much detail, so half the time I was just like well ok it looks like there might be a sac of something over there, guess I'll draw that in. So I'm really happy it actually makes real physical sense!Β

Hello! I am from :iconprojectcomment: -

I think what you have done here is really great, I also took some time to look at allot of your other work as well, your skill set is very high and very detailed that was my first thought right away, my secondΒ  was I can not even come close to that as far as time putt into a single piece and time into detailing... and I love details.. lol! Anyway! Back to the critique / comment hooblaa. Your shading is very well done very smooth around the front of the face nose area, while I understand the head is open in the back and on the shoulders I feel it lacked a little on said areas. You captured beautifully with your line work and surprised me even more when you say charcoal... I could not even imagine I wish like you said the photo was in higher quality much like your other work is, I would also love to see you water color something like this for your water color work is extremely well done as well. I commend you for being in a class, I never got the chance to get one and feel it lack luster my skill sets but I can see why and where it comes into play with your work and how it's working and your natural abilities I am sure are working together to produce such love art as this! I hope the best and can't wait to see more!

This is incredible!

Haha, I'm pretty sure that this one was petrified too though! Just sliced a little bit differently >_>

Thank you!

Where/when did/do you take art classes?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fiendishfens In reply to KCHuang [2016-04-21 10:45:12 +0000 UTC]

I never really took art classes! Although I've been meaning to go to figure/life drawing for *ages*.
I took anatomy classes at university, I have a degree in neuroscience so there was a compulsory head/neck moduleΒ  Β I don't remember any of it though :')

omg that emoticon xD Β

ugggh you must have a strong stomach for a degree in neuroscience >_< this anatomy class nearly killed me when we had to go to the morgue for our cadaver drawings...when I first unzipped the bag I had to go back out the door. Β I can still smell the formaldehyde... #foreverscarred Β

This was just a reference image though, and thankfully the instructor didn't make us draw it in the morgue.

Hehe, the emoticons were one of the reasons I decided to sign up here again

I don't have a particularly strong stomach (I could never be a nurse or doctor), and I was lucky that we never had to work on cadavers - the specimen we used were preserved and you can sort of separate yourself from that (although formaldehyde does smell truly disgusting ). The only live tissue I remember dealing with was the brain, but it had all the blood vessels and crap removed so it just looked like this squidgy ball 8D

KCHuang In reply to fiendishfens [2016-04-26 23:36:14 +0000 UTC]

haha!Β The only brains I've seen were in museums, I'll assume they looked like that xD

I have friends who used to do research on brains (mouse brains usually) - they were researching what cocaine does to proteins in the brain >_> So they had the dubious street cred of being able to say "oh my shipment of cocaine just came in." >_>

BrazenBandito [2016-02-05 03:15:25 +0000 UTC]

The fact that you can do that with charcoal is really impressive.Β  I hate working with charcoal because it's so difficult and messy, but you've really developed a cool style with it.Β  Instead of a camera phone, you could just take it to a xerox machine and carefully scan it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KCHuang In reply to BrazenBandito [2016-02-05 07:12:14 +0000 UTC]

I find that it's all about the direction you let it be messy in, and getting really good with an eraser. It probably also helps to use a really large paper pad.

And I'll keep the scanner in mind, thanks! Truth be told I'm terrified of letting my charcoal drawings touch any surface, which is why I've never tried haha.

CiNiTriQs In reply to KCHuang [2016-02-06 11:59:43 +0000 UTC]

Can you try to just "fix" the charcoal drawing with some sort of spray (after that it becomes easier to handle in a scanner, of course, if the scanner is large enough, if you have to scan it in 4 timΓΉes it's still going to be a challenge )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KCHuang In reply to CiNiTriQs [2016-02-06 19:11:15 +0000 UTC]

I do fix it (several times >.<), but experience dictates it never works 100%...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CiNiTriQs In reply to KCHuang [2016-02-06 19:42:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh for sure it does indeed not always take as well as one would like especially with looser media like charcoal. I was just wondering how I could "fix" the issue anyway. Do we really need to put a layer of varnish over it in order to preserve? (... done some light search engine reading and found out that one can fix it with fixative if used with several layers (diff angles) and after brushing away loose particles etc etc but it remains a charcoal/pencil type artifact which will need careful handling all the time (when framing one could better use a double or triple mat in order to create some breathing room between the glass and the artwork... Well well, I didn't even realize about that until today...)
***mumbling something about printing press and preserving and copies and wanders off into the evening... ***

I think so! Well, everything but the actual cadaver drawings...this class is an exercise on how to find the most palatable way to present really gruesome situations, and I do find that pretty interesting.
