Description For 2-D Design.

For this assignment, we chose a black and white photo from a magazine and gridded it. Then, on 18in x 24in paper, we drew a distorted grid with equal "squares" in it. Then, the fun began when we had to render the photo according to the funky grid.

The second part of the assignment was to cut up the photo and copy the values, swatch by swatch, and arrange all of that into its own composition. Originally I'd arranged them into a shape that mirrored the main drawing, but my teacher told me to really think about it and try again. I think the photo swatches were supposed to be spacially close to the drawn copies, but I figured... What better way to see accuracy than by mixing it up with the original? It was really neat to see how everything lined up, because in the process of the thing you don't really have a sense of how the whole picture comes together.

It's weird... After completing the assignment, I felt this attachment to Jeff Bridges. I know that drawing someone is how I show my appreciation for them, but I don't remember ever having seem any of his movies. It worked in reverse this time, I guess: through the drawings, I came to appreciate him and become interested in what he's done. A couple months later, I was surprised to find out that one of my new favorite songs even sampled strings from Starman.

I like this. It kinda looks like me except I'm not Bridges.
