Description There are many versions of the mythological gathering known as "The Wild Hunt", but I illustrated mine with a nod to the Celtic/British, and a bit of my own dream narrative. This a fearsome gathering of vengeful spirits racing across the aether, hunting the unwary or the foolish. At the front of the hunt is a giant dark bear of furious strength, representing the raw power of nature. The indifferent stag represents the brutal indifference of the wild. He is also a "god" of the hunt here, pulling his company with his immense gravity of power. The dark hounds are actually hell hounds, negative spirits sent from the underworld to pursue prey, and to drag the captured down with them. Ghosts of ravens and other carrion birds keep behind the group, waiting for any scraps to devour. One of the ghosts carries a rowan branch, a symbol of transformative power and the waning months of the year. A silver hooked cord binds the company together, in both the physical world, and the dream world.

Scratchboard and watercolor (with a limited amount of post processing to correct scanner errors), 24x12 inches. This piece was a behemoth of a time sink at 250-ish hours. Multiple mistakes and were made, and one catastrophic failure forced me to restart. The carving tools used in this piece were a fine point etching needle, steel wool, and fiberglass. The background was exclusively carved out with the fine point etching needle. Each creature is the result of at least 5-7 redraws and color applications. This gives my finished pieces a very nice engraved appearance, along with a "shimmer" from the mixture of the depth of carving and the application of watercolor layers. The result is a huge amount of time spent on any given piece, and a unique physical presence.

Cool work! I love how stylized it looks, like it was an geniuine medieval artwork.

This is amazing. The light, the depth, the striking contrast of the white deer against the darkness, the ravens...I love all of it.

Absolutely stunning work.  The stag has such a cold, beautiful face.  All of the figures are so powerful, and I love the little whirlwinds in their wake . . .

Gorgeous gorgeous. Everything you produce is just stunning, it seems you mix your own blood and sweat into each piece. The fluid movement of your characters add this old-time, elegant feel that is just inspiring.

The time spent was worth it! The colours in this are lovely. Jewel-like, as someone else described them. I love the detail in the textures too.

I use fiberglass to get that smooth silky look. It is a shame that you can't see it in person. The actual piece has depth in its surface. The stag is actually a tiny bit raised off the panel because of the background being cut so deeply.

I would really love to be able to see one of your pieces in person sometime. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford an original.

A beautiful balance of darkness and light, brutality and delicacy, I like how the detailed, refined drawing clashes with the wild aspect of the subject.
And you have my never-ending admiration for the amount of time you spent on this, I must say it was worth it, though I am sorry for the pain it may have caused.

No joke, but I was really starting to lose my mind after working on it for so long, and making so many mistakes on an unforgiving medium. Thank you for your kind words. This makes it all worth it.

250 hours. I don't know what kind of praise would come close to befitting an effort and a result this amazing.

The hour count is also accounting for having to start over once after ruining the background. I think if I had not botched that last panel, this would have taken around 200 hours instead.

Stunning work. I love the effect you've achieved- almost jewel-like. Subject matter, color scheme, figure work, are all quite wonderful. All the work you put into this, shows, which is good because you obviously put a lot into it.

Thanks! I felt like my brain was melting near the end, but it was very worth it. It is a shame so much gets lost in the translation from physical piece to pixels though.

There is a good side to that loss, and that is that makes your physical original unique and infinitely valuable when compared to anything anyone may print.

I hope to sell it over the holidays. A great perk of working in traditional media is that you can sell your original pieces for a good deal of money.

It is... if you know how to sell it. I'm still learning how to find people interested in buying. May I ask you, do you exhibit in galleries, sell on art specialized websites, or go out to some local place you know with your works- or which is the way you usually sell?

KeelyDolan In reply to YemaYema [2013-11-28 18:08:14 +0000 UTC]

I mainly sell independently and through galleries, and I have a couple of collectors that buy from me. Sometimes I get booths in art markets, and sell alongside other artists. There is one coming up if you happen to be in Seattle next month.

I guess it's all about perseverance and being out and about then until people gets to know you and buy art then? The market sure sounds interesting... but I don't see myself leaving Australia anytime soon! Thanks for sharing.
