Description New and improved! EDIT: Rainbow's yellow mane/cutie mark color was incorrectly listed. This has since been fixed, please redownload the updated copy.

All of the color guides are getting a revamp. The guides are all now two pages, one for digital applications (such as vectors, painting in Photoshop, 3D modeling, etc) and the other for print applications (customs, merch, T-shirts, et cetera). The PNG preview for the digital guide should be OK to use as well, so the PDF is optional.

If you use Google Chrome or Safari, they will attempt to open the file in-line with Google Docs PDF viewer. DO NOT EYEDROP THOSE COLORS. SAVE THE PDF FILE. The Google Docs viewer displays in a very low bit depth that results in dithering of the colors. Until Deviantart gives me a way to disable this, you should use the download file link to view the guide!

They are also now more space efficient, and will be able to scale better with ponies that have more colors than normal.

The Digital guides aim to be as close to the show as possible, while the print guides aim to be as close to official merch as possible. When there's no merch of that pony (e.g. background ponies) then the print colors will be based on my conversions which will aim to reproduce the show without looking too weird or have obvious gamut problems.

It is safe to eyedrop the digital colors or use the hex/RGB codes - the swatches should match up just fine. Just make sure you're working in sRGB color mode.

For the merch guides, the spot colors are rendered using CMYK alternate color space. This is based on my own examinations of the merch boxes, where the spot colors are simulated straight to process anyway.

When I tried to design the character in a pony town thats what I got, by comparison trying to redesign Twilight Sparkle had been absolute nightmare because it was difficult to replicate her purple

thanks, this was very useful! I'll give you credit. Honestly with as many of your color guides as I've used at this pont, you have more contribution on my work than I do.

Just a question: Why are there little vector artifacts in the file's background?
I imported the first page and found a bunch of gray fragments. The PDF is extremely slow to open in Adobe Reader and the file size is 5.9 MB.
Is that like a method of diverting plagiarizers from copying the file or is it just a mistake? Or is it something else?

kefkafloyd In reply to notofMYworld [2012-10-05 00:28:22 +0000 UTC]

It's a transparent effect of an ink splatter brush. It makes the gradient background less boring. I wanted to make it look pretty.

I could rasterize the background, but... Scaleabiliy. :V

spiderweber [2012-07-06 01:17:56 +0000 UTC]

I hate to be a bother, but I don't have illustrator, or photoshop to type in the pantones. is there any way you can do the RGB values along the sides like you have with the newer ones? that would greatly help. thank you for your time.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kefkafloyd In reply to spiderweber [2012-07-06 01:24:33 +0000 UTC]

The RGB values are right there on page one, they're listed in hex format. This guide is in the newer format.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

spiderweber In reply to kefkafloyd [2012-07-06 02:21:05 +0000 UTC]

sorry about that. I'm not quite sure how to read those numbers. How do you read hex format? my program only has the sliders.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kefkafloyd In reply to spiderweber [2012-07-06 03:00:07 +0000 UTC]

Usually the program will have an area in the picker where you can type the hex values. It's just hex values instead of octal values for RGB. 00 is 000, FF is 255.

You could always eyedrop the color swatches.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

spiderweber In reply to kefkafloyd [2012-07-06 03:06:00 +0000 UTC]

I can't do either. the program doesn't have the area to type it, and I can't open the pdf in the program. it's paint tool sai. unless I'm missing something. >.>

How do I get my computer to save it as a JPG file or something that will open with photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kefkafloyd In reply to RensMeerkat [2012-06-10 02:30:07 +0000 UTC]

Photoshop will open PDFs, just select it in the open dialog and it will prompt you to rasterize.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RensMeerkat In reply to kefkafloyd [2012-06-10 02:59:54 +0000 UTC]

How? When I try to downlaod it, it just opens up and I can't save it at all. Plus my computer makes this annoying clicking sound non stop until I close the page.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kefkafloyd In reply to RensMeerkat [2012-06-10 03:01:53 +0000 UTC]

You should find a download link on the deviantart page on the right hand side. Right click, save as. You should then be able to go to Photoshop, choose Open, then browse to the file.

RensMeerkat In reply to kefkafloyd [2012-06-10 03:12:09 +0000 UTC]

Dosen't work for me. When I write click, it thinks I want to save the background for the page.
