Mateusz wasn't entirely sure what brought him to the current situation he was in. But he blamed the painkillers, the ones used to dull the searing pain in his shoulder, for his foggy memory. Perhaps there was an underlying issue as well, but he opted not to delve into that at that point. He was too busy babbling away to his roommate, tears streaming down his face as his hiccuped and sobbed before them.
It did indeed begin with painkillers. Teu shoveled a hoof-full into his mouth, guzzling them down with a bitter wine he had been casually sipping the night before. He was (mostly) sober now, withdrawn as he was he still knew his limits and the stupid things he often did when intoxicated.
He had just wrenched away the blankets and pillows from his bed, collapsing onto the sloppy pile as he awaited the comforting numbness the medication gave him. His eyes closed, but he could only picture them, them. They haunted his dreams, ever since the explosion. Yozora. Arges. Irusu. Vincent. The twins. Caivarus. But it was them that scared him, pried him from his sleep and dousing him in a cold sweat that left him shaking rather violently in his empty room. His breath would echo off the corners and walls, a frightening harmony of unnecessary dread.
Black eyes blinked gently open, golden eyelids fluttering as he felt the first set of tears begin to well up in his eyes. Why was he thinking of that now of all times? He didn't know, but suddenly he was afraid. Pictured the bloody gashes over their already beaten bodies. Chips of blue on the ground. Blue scales. Blue fire. Blue was everywhere. Teu sucked in a breath, throat squeezing tight and making it difficult to breathe.
Blue. It complimented red far better than green ever could. The crimson blood. Red coat, the red of the bombs used to break the cell door. Red was everywhere too, that day.
Then there was purple. Purple scales, shimmering and reflecting blue and red hues beautifully. Purple bodies, illuminated by purple light. Purple blanket--Teu's brow furrowed at this, but the thought was dismissed quickly.
The unicorn's shoulders shook as he tried to catch his breath, now suddenly lost and vanishing faster than he could grasp it. He muffled a sob into a pillow, muzzle buried into the soft plush thing so deeply that now he definitely couldn't breathe. His eyes closed again, tightly this time. He must have tore his wound with his prior thrashing, as he could feel warmth spread over his shoulder and something running down his foreleg. None of this he cared for, only saw them.
Red on blue, red on purple, gashes, burns, vile injuries that made Teu dizzy. It was all he saw in his dreams, those two bodies covered in red. Gasping for breath, dying, and Teu being dragged away by the others. His screams echoed throughout the space but they could not hear him. Only when his dream shattered into reality would they answer. He didn't know this feeling, this intense wave of fear, followed by a relief no drug or narcotic could give him. His shuddering breaths slowed, watery eyes lifting to stare at the little origami figurine of himself. He knew what it was, but he had never felt it before.
Quickly, he stood, legs shaking as he blindly stumbled to his door. His teke grabbed the handle as another sob escaped him, but he was smiling now. He yanked the door open, eyes already searching for them, them.
He found them at the end of the hall by the fire, of course by the fire. Blue and purple stared up at him as he stood there, his face drenched in tears and bandaged stained a red as dark as his own coat. He probably looked like a mess, and as he gave another 'hic,' he found his voice.
"I th...think I love you," he breathed.
