This was an interesting picture I did a few years back. My goal was to emulate some of the great portrait paintings by Dave Rapoza, but in my own way.

Instead of starting with a drawing, I bought some cheap Sculpey knock-off clay and sculpted a face. I took about a dozen pictures of the sculpt, each with different lighting schemes. The one that I chose had some ambient light hitting the front and and LED light casting a blue light from the side.

From there, I took that photo and worked on top of it in Photoshop and Corel Painter. Even though I had a solid photo of the sculpt to work with, adding all the texture and color was still a lot of work. Also, the neck and chest had to be added in later. I'm overall happy with the result, and I've since gone on to use this method several times more. I've found that it saves a lot time (starting with a physical sculpt) and makes the process of painting much more fun.
