It was meant to look like a cheesy mix of the fool moon and a sponge, I suppose 
Cheshire cats are made of cheese -> as far as I know Lewis Carrol used the cheese in the form of a laughing cat made by a company somewhere in the northen england, (che)shire, for his character of the book.
Shimigami -> japanese Deth-gods, used in the Anime DeathNote. The sentence "Did you know that Shinigami only eat apples, so one day they will have blood-red hands" comes from this anime, too.
The cat's eyes remined me at such a shinigami. So I just mixe d everything up.
