Description My new dragon statue is done
The hardest part was definately the damn sword.
Looks like shit. Best I could do with such a leetle thing.

10" tall, including the base.
Made primarily with Super Sculpey (the base is regular sculpey)

I'm still not sure if I want to paint it, so I'm submitting it as a finished peice. If I do end up painting it, it would look like an entirely different sculpture, and I don't want this stage to be lost in my scraps, never to be seen again. Im pretty sure that was a run on sentence.

Some older stages:

I know this is old, but the individual scales thing is a huge inspiration to me.Β

I love your dragon, amazing details. I have a few quick questions for you I hope you don't mind. . . I am getting into molding and I was wondering how much clay you needed to do this? Also can these be painted after curing? And last but not least do you have a good suggestion on where to buy the tools and clay? Thanks all much

Thanks a bunch! I used two different Sculpey clays - regular white Sculpey for the bulk of it (cause its cheaper), then Super Sculpey over that for details like scales (cause its much stronger). I dont remember exactly how much I used, but I think one box of each was plenty (boxes are roughly 1 lb or less, I believe.) You can get Sculpey & tools at AC Moore or Michaels, make sure to check ads for coupons cause they usually have a 40-50% off coupon. After the sculpture's been baked you can paint them with anything really, I usually use acrylic paint or spraypaint. Might want to start with a layer of white to make sure your colors come out right. Let me know if you have any more questions C:

OMG this is a lot of helpful information when I get my computer back up I'm gonna follow your work! Thanks so much! Oh lol last question can you use an oven to cure I have no means to get an actual kiln.

kelly-knowles In reply to Animal-Ive-Become [2011-12-15 19:29:48 +0000 UTC]

No kiln necessary, Sculpey is meant for the oven (275 degrees for about 15 min I believe, itll say on the box.)

I made a big mistake with my first sculpture - after the 15 minutes were up I poked it and it seemed soft, so I left it in the oven for waayy too long and it burned (turned dark purple and was real brittle.) Sculpey actually hardens as it cools, so don't be fooled if it still seems a bit soft when you take it out of the oven.

Question: Can you fire Scupty twice? Example: Can you make the base first, fire it hard and then do the super over the hardened surface of the once baked white sculpt without hardming either?

New to all of this and just learning myself, Thank You!

kelly-knowles In reply to LadyCherish [2010-02-15 22:08:58 +0000 UTC]

I haven't tried it myself, but I hear you can bake Sculpey multiple times. I think you just want to do it at a lower temperature so the parts you baked first dont end up burning the second time around. (I dont know how much lower... But from my experience, burnt Sculpey isnt the end of the world - I baked my first sculpture 2-3x as long as I should have, and it just turned a purplish brown color. Not a problem if you're gonna paint it.) Some people recommend using a heat gun to cure the sculpture in sections, which I'd imagine would give you more control over what parts are hardened and how hard. But I haven't tried that either dX

kelly-knowles In reply to Zen-Art-Gallery [2007-11-10 01:47:41 +0000 UTC]

I start with aluminum foil and make a swan shaped thingy, then start adding Sculpey clay to it. Super Sculpey is best, less likely to break when the sculpture's done. Uhhasfortools, I use two: an X-Acto knife and the round end of a nut pick (a pencil's eraser would probably work just as well) for putting on the scales. I guess that sums it up XD Aluminum foil, Super Sculpey, X-Acto knife, and a nut pick if you're gonna be making anything with scales.

I'm rather partial to the intimate look of unpainted Super Sculpey. It feels like something the artist poured himself into and stepped away from for just a few minutes. The varying thickness of the clay also give its a luminosit, especially the pointed tips of the teeth.

I love the immense detail in the horns and the way the smooth center contrasts with the scales. The teeth look a little uneven with a few long ones on the side and shorter ones at front -- though this could just be the angle of the picture. This asymetry is most noticable in the upper left picture and its rather distracting. Again, it could possibly just be the angles.

Best of all is the anguished look on this dragon's face. The energy is so palpable, you can jsut *feel* the life emanating from it even while it struggles with death. Amazing work.
