(please read from right to left)just for fun
I know this is quite an old idea... but I still want to represent it in my own way... not that sad way...
I draw Azula as "a helpless girl who was not able to protect her most precious toy".... hahaha... and her friends is trying to comfort her~ (naughty naughty Zuko~)
is that cute?
but it's also true that she is the legal heir to the thorne...isn't she...

I just saw the trailer for book3 (never saw that before)... the editing is sooo Awesome I admit....BUT it looks like Azula is completely mad and evil there!! hey! don't bulling my elegant princess >A<# !!

Azula going crazy isn't really her fault, she wasΒ used as a tool of war by her father. He's the one who took over her education and started honing her fire bending skill at such a young age, most importantly he is the one who instilled the belief that you had to be feared in order to lead, and look down upon others, into her. This is clearly evident in Zuko for a period of time before his insecurities and conscience snap him out of it for good by season 3. Azula however spent her entire childhood being tutored by that and having Ozai's values and worst traits instilled within her from the get-go she had no chance of being anything else. Azula displayed behavioral issues because she could never understand that Zuko's gentleness was what Ursa wanted to nurture in him this is why she loved him so much, and she was making up for Ozai's indifference. Because Azula's never been taught to consider anything but a person's ability to fire bend as the measure to gauge if someone is worthy of her respect or not.Β That's the standard she's used her entire life to determine the worth of the people around her, and it's one that has been instilled in her by Ozai,Β are they of the fire nation? Are they of royal status? Are they a better fire bender than her? Azula respects strength and show of force above all else because that is Ozai's method, and it became her own style as well. And if the answer is no to any of the questions above then the person is worthless in her opinion, therefore she shows them nothing but contempt.Β Only Ozai and Iroh are better fire benders than Azula for the majority of the series, therefore she has been given no reason (as far as the bar she measures people's ability and worth on is concerned) to respect or treat anyone else as an equal that she encounters.
She even shows disdain towards their uncle because Azula respects strength and thus she views Iroh's gentleness as a great weakness of his, but her measure of Zuko is obvious in her complete lack of respect and near constant mockery of him, for the majority of their screen time together she is far more skilled than him in every way. ThusΒ she views him as an embarrassment or an amusing side show and it is very clear she never considered Zuko a rival for the throne once he was banished. But most of allΒ running deep underneath this, is her constant anger and jealousy that their mother loved him more, that their mother chose Zuko over her. This is the root of Azula's anger towards Zuko at its core and it has been eating away at her for years, only she masks her jealousy and loneliness with an air of superiority and the knowledge that she is better then him.Β While Zuko himself has always been jealous of Azula's natural ability to fire bend, he is embarrassed and angry during the series that she is so much better than him despite being younger. And of equal importance is the fact Zuko is jealous of Azula for having their father's approval because Ozai takes great pride in her level of ability.Β
So their rivalry in the series is entirely their parents doing, Ozai crafted Azula into the weapon she is with his own hands while treating Zuko like dirt which led to Azula treating him the exact same way. This caused Zuko to resent her, while Ursa gave all of her love and attention to Zuko to make up for Ozai's indifference towards him, which led to her shunning Azula due to her similarity to Ozai and her cold, manipulative and cruel personality, which wasn't Azula's fault, instead it is what Ozai created her to be. Which made Azula feel like a monster constantly unloved and overlooked by her own mother, along with the intense pressure Azula feels to be perfect and get everything exactly right all the time, along with her inability to relate to anyone her own age or form actual bonds that don't come with strings attached (like in her dealings with her father) or open threats and hostilities (like towards her friends Mai and Ty lee, who Azula made fear her so that she could have dominance over them, yet she still considers them in a naieve, child-like way her friends and this is obvious when their betrayal and eventual switching of sides hurts her so much).Β
Then Zuko reappears having become a far better fire bender, out of nowhere in the same moment her 'friends' turn on her. So her underlings have overcome their fear of her in order to support her inferior brother, who suddenly isn't so inferior anymore and both events take her by complete surprise, Azula is all about control and strength and order,Β in this encounter these things happen immediately one after the other. Then she gets abandonedΒ by her own father because he fears her lust for power as well (seeing he made her after all) and she gets cast aside and left behindΒ so he can go off in glorious conquest, with her having served all purpose he ever intended for her to have.Β So the foundations she had built her entire character and person around from a little child under his careful guidance were shattered one by one, that you needed to make people fear you, that you had to be stronger than your opposition (she gets beaten by Katara a lowly water peasant and someone far below her status) after having believed that her position and royal status was everything. And that she could always rely on her father, the one person she believed in more than anything only for him to abandon her. So she becomes paranoid and snaps completely when Katara defeats her in her lowest moment so far.
I do wonder how the Angi Kai would have gone if Azula had been of a stable mind when it took place, just because if Zuko had beaten her in that moment when she was capable and at her full strength, she may have even come to respect him due to him becoming the better fire bender out of the two of them, and him having surpassed her. Azula as I said above all else respects strength. Instead Azula was off her game when he challenged her for the throne. But I do hope they do something to help Azula regain her sanity she was so young in the series and her final few episodes sort of broke through the hard cold shell she displayed to everyone, letting us see the broken little girl underneath, I do feel when she collapsed into her crying fit that she should have screamed for their mother because it was the catalyst to everything, and the ghost haunting her.

In my opinion, Azula would have ended up completely different if her father hadn't been such a distrustful asshole.

Ok, well... having seen how the series ends maybe, and I want to stress MAYBE, Azula's demise at the end of the series was a bit unfair, i actually felt sorry for her... that said, Zuko could have done something ten thousand times worse, like chaining her to a pedestal and expose her as a war trophy during his coronation, and still they wouldn't be even. Azula made Zuko's life a living hell from day 1. Her insanity is like a godly punishment.
That said... good work, it's really funny!

actually in royal families the Prince is the legal heir to the throne and becomes king once the previous king steps down or dies. The Princess is only heir if the prince doesn't accept the throne, or if a prince was never born, and she also doesn't become queen until she marries.

This is Fire Nation, b&*%$. As an absolute monarchy, the Fire Lord can do whatever he or she wants, and can appoint anyone to the position of Heir/heiress to the Fire Nation throne, even someone who doesn't have any relations to the royal family.

But in my own opinion, though Azula is not a good person I admit, she probably can be a great fire lord, cus looking back to real oriental history, I found she really got all the qualification and key talent as a excellent ruler. that's a pity for FireNation seriously.

in chinese history, the heir of the throne was the most telent prince (frist prince in some case), called "crown prince", but it's also a very dangerous status, because other prices and their partys would try to kill or abolish him in any way possible.
it seems very similar to the fire royal family, the only difference is princess also could be the heir.
