Description Another assignment, we had to document a process...

so i fiddled with a dozen ideas and couldn't think of one... until my absinthe enthusiast boyfriend told me to document the process of mixing absinthe..

duh! so simple and i didn't think of it.

came out pretty good if i do say so myself... this version had a slight green hue added to it in PS the assignment version does not.
the real light filter wasn't as green as i would have liked.. oh well

BTW this is the Bohemian version of absinthe, not the french, thus it is a differnt colour and dosn't go milky when the sugar and water are added.

enjoy!

'Bohemian-style absinth' is not a 'version' of absinthe but an imitation-wannabe from the 1990's that even failed to resemble absinthe – due to the sad fact that its creators had making money in mind rather than making absinthe. This is what happens when a famous drink's name is not regulated by law; some companies make up random (and cheap to produce) spirit drinks, and then use the big name to sell them. Most people don't now what absinthe should taste like, so 'bohemian absinth' is a gold mine.

The 'fire ritual', of course, was also invented recently with 'Bohemian absinth', and hasn't got anything to do with absinthe.

yeah... bohemian absinthe. Funny thing that even ingredients are different... that's why doesn't go milky. It's just colored spirit. Try tasting real French Absinthe like Lemecier or cheap Spanish like Philippe LASALA. There is also "real" one or as you preffer "traditional" one in Czech Republic > Absinth Bairnsfather Bitter Extra Anis (made by American Guy living there) and St. Antoine.

when my friend gave me absinthe he never mixed it with anything, maybe it would have been more tolerable if he did. haha but it was wonderful.

A lot of confusion here!

Absinthe is not illegal in most places these days and never really was illegal in a lot of places such as here in the UK -- I believe it's still illegal to make in the US but not illegal to own or drink. In France it is not illegal to make Absinthe but still illegal to call it that on bottles!

Real Absinthe is distilled, once will make a clear drink (la Bleue) and then a second step can be performed with herbs to colour it a natural green (Verte).

The original way to mix a dose would never use burning. Ice cold water is poured over a spoon holding the sugar -- though it is perfectly acceptable not to use sugar. The cold water process releases the aromas and flavours.

As of this year, Absinthe is legal in the US again. Americans believed the mythology related to absithe for far too long, which means I didn't get to actually try it until recently. I'm ecstatic!

this the the directions on the bottle for this brand, and since i was asked to recreate an instruction book, i did as i was told by my professor. the only reason the sugar is burned in some places is so that it melts faster. And the sugar is only used to sweeten the bitterness.

and im aware what the water itself does it releases the oils of the wormwood to make it cloudy green.

i've had the blue absinthe. It's nasty..

i've been reading up on this. And my husband has been a enthusiast for years knowing history and so on.

the idea is great, but you should have used an absinthe with anise because the louche it produces is beautiful and would make this a nice classic introduction to absinthe. this way of preparing absinthe is really awful and not very pleasant at all (imo). Also, it looks like an unnaturally colored absinthe, maybe that happened in post though.

I really like the idea, but it would be so much greater if it addressed the more traditional way of preparing absinthe since that's a much more beautiful process.

i would have used persian but we didnt have any at the time, nor had 70$ to buy a bottle for the shot.

And that is chez absinthe, and it is real, it's that blue colour., and that is how you prepare absinthe, only it's a different brand just not green. My husband is a sinth enthusiest so i learned from him.

BOO to modern burning If you really want the traditional way try using water it is much better I have been drinking it for a few years now and using water is the only way to go! Also if you still insist having burnt flavored Absinthe use the proper spoon O.o it would make the picture look so much better to people who is a seasoned drinker and also would not give new drinkers the wrong impression otherwise great shot love your colors, love the set up

I thought that the spoon was supposed to stay across the top of the glass as the water was dripped down(or poured) over the sugar cube.

the color looks gorgeous in this anyway.

lovely process.

I live in Czech Republic and I have to say thatΒ΄s almost exactly the way how I make it. ThereΒ΄s only one difference - the sugar should melt, not caramelise.

LOL, yes, yes it does. I had a shot during my trip to London...fyi, the expatriots in France sipped it as a drink with the measurements you've documented. Nowadays they just melt some sugar into a shot and you'd better have a chaser handy.
PS, I HATE black jelly beans and anything else flavored with Anise...yet I bought a bottle in Scotland to bring home to the states. That was two years ago and only 3 shots are gone from the bottle

Apparently it is legal to own in the US but you're not allowed to sell or transport it. I think those are the laws.

I made my own from an old recipe of 11 herbs last year.. reasonably potent, although much more bitter than storebought (since the wormwood count was much higher- and if you're not a decent herbalist, don't try it). And no, wormwood is not illegal in Canada (as it is the U.S.) but there are some self-imposed regulations on dosage to prevent any lawsuits, etc.

IMM0RTALIZED-KA0S In reply to kindlight [2007-03-03 09:34:21 +0000 UTC]

yes, 11 herbs...16 oils!! Used an eyedropper to place the oil mixture alone, upon my tongue one time and, well, yeah!! Lets just say one wont be doing that again in a hurry...not only did it taste absolutely disgusting, but the massive headrush it gave was so, that it finalled in a huge headache the next morn! lol... I am a shaman herbalist, (qualified) and thoroughly enjoy 'concocting' and experimenting with mixes in my kitchen!! I am my own guinea pig!

Wormwood is fantastic, providing one knows what one is doing, yes...and it is definitely a required taste for most, and thankfully is sold reasonably easily here in Ozzy. Helps to know those in health shops and who own herb farms!!

merry feying with the green liquor of the Underworld friend!!

GAAHHH!!
Essential oils are far too strong for even that kind of mix.. somebody in the US killed themself with wormwood oil (renal kidney failure). No, I worked in a good health food store so I ordered all the organic herbs in bulk and made a cold maceration from them, etc..
