What's the point of critique when the artwork is perfect? e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>
First of all, I am a big fan of square format, so the almost square-ish format of this artwork immediately grabbed my attention. There's something about it that makes the artwork more dramatic, the content mashed up in the smaller space, leaving very little blank space and attacking my senses with certain urgency.
I like the contrasting color gradient, the blue evokes an underwater environment, while the glowing fish seem to be on fire. I imagine that the fish are some sort of fire elementals, being able to live under water without their fire being quenched.
I assume that the person is woman, judging by the prominent, typically feminine features (small chin, big lashes, red lips, tiny torso, long hair) but I like to imagine that it might be other gender as well e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/> Her presence is somehow subtle yet powerful at the same time. She is more part of the background, thanks to the body's color matching the background, so it takes a moment to focus attention on her. However, once you notice her, your eye will never leave you. She is poised as if facing away from you, yet the eye looks right at you. She is not a mere object to be looked at . She has agency, a will of her own, thanks to the piercing look.
Last but not least, I appreciate the artist's watermark being present yet non-disturbing. So many people use the obnoxious DA watermark, which usually totally ruins the picture. I am all for putting signature on your work (how else are people going to know the author's name if the artwork gets shared without attribution?) and this is example of doing it the right way!
Fabulous work, keep it up! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="20" height="20" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="60" title="Clap"/>

When I first read Eli's review I thought it was a bit over the top. But the longer I look at this drawing the more I like it. Subtle details such as the fish seem to be swimming in circles, circles of meaning, flowing like the subject's hair.
When I read your comments I thought that this would have been an excellent DVD or youtube video, with comments, so you can let people know about all the decisions and changes you made, and why.
Are you going to offer this print for sale?

Before I take a look into this piece, I did want to say something… One of the first times I heard of and spoke with (and boy did we speak) you was when I gave feedback on a piece you did for a movie called Up!
If I recall you drew Kevin and Russell sitting together on a log.
Now I don’t remember back then whether you were just getting somewhere with your art, but it’s clear right now that you’re reaching a serious level of success, and for that I have to say congratulations and well done, dude. Your first DD, nearly 10,000 watchers as of right now, over 100k page views… Those are numbers I can only dream of having.
Don’t stop, whatever you do. Who knows where you could be by the time you get to my age?
(Geez, I made myself sound old… )
Now onto the real reason I’m here, the feedback! Going from UP to Into The Blue it’s hard to ignore the serious rise in quality and effort of your artwork. This simply looks so lucid it can’t be real, and the level of detail you’ve drawn for the fish and the feminine creature is incredible to say the least.
The hair seems to flow like some kind of energy, the eyes pierce deep into your soul and the features are quite well-realised. She seems to be aligned in a pose aimed at covering herself up… Maybe she’s not exactly pleased that we discovered her sanctuary, let alone while completely in the nude.
The abyss-like light and dark blues suggest we’re down deep in the ocean, where only the rarest and most beautiful creatures can survive, and what’s seen up here is no exception. Overall, I feel something like this deserves a spot in my “Honorary Class” collection, whatever that means to you. The details and effort are hard to ignore, and the final result is an intriguing, mysterious and above all else beautiful piece of artwork. Way to go!

Reading this makes me so damn happy. I never really put it into perspective, or paused to really think about where I've come and what I've achieved. I've achieved so much so quickly, more than I could have imagined... seriously... thank you. It really means a lot that you support me and really do believe in me.
Moreso, thanks so much for such an insightful critique on my work, it's really nice to be able to read a deep constructive analysis on my work. I love when people really read into and look at my work closely, because it helps me get a better grasp of what my work means to others.
Thanks so much pal, I hope you're doing well!!!
(PS. It definitely was an awesome and really interesting chat we had back then!)

Think nothing of it. Though I certainly believed in you after your drawing for UP, I probably haven't supported you enough, if I had to be honest. The least I can do is watch you, as you have done for me since ages ago.
That being said, it does make me feel great pride for you to see just how far your artwork has come in the months since then. I mean, I recently took a quick peek at your drawing for Mr. Iwata, and you don't need my feedback to tell you that he'd be utterly proud of your tribute to him.
As for the feedback for this piece, it's been a real pleasure, as always. Perhaps even more so with how much of a marked improvement there was in the quality of work.
As for you asking me if I'm doing well, I can't complain I s'pose. Another semester over, a new one about to begin in about a week's time, and only taking three subjects this time. I scraped passes on a majority of third year subjects; not proud of the fact, but I had two exams basically in a row this time... I'm just happy I passed at all.

That's okay, you even critiquing is more than enough support! Really helpful as well.
Awgh, thanks so much once again, you always just hit me right in the feels hahaha. It's definitely been a journey throughout the last year or so, and I'm really happy with where I'm going and where I am now. I can only hope that I can continue to work hard and get better.
How good's the holidays!! Haha (dammit, we're back at uni again, sigh). Pff, I'm pretty sure that's how a lot of us feel. I'm not so motivated to excel in my studies anymore, just hoping for a pass if anything, which is a little sad, but ah well. CONGRATS ON PASSING BUT

Well, I do make it a point to be constructive and/or supportive, wherever it's needed. But of course, my opinion's just as subjective as everyone else's here. Whether one acts on my words or not is entirely up to them. Put another way, they can ignore it, address it, or embrace it.
Yeah, it's funny that for a guy who's not exactly the most emotive type you'll ever see, I have a strange knack for words. Explains why I write for a hobby. I can just see the tears and emotion you put into that particular work for Mr. Iwata, and I'm all the gladder for seeing that piece.
Eh, honestly, I do tend to miss university after a few weeks into my holidays. Might have something to do with the fact I'm not a very outgoing person, and also the fact that there's only so many games you can play before you get bored. Though I did get my teeth well sunk into Terraria, an indie game based on Minecraft that I found on Steam. Just ten bucks, and I was having a hell of a fun time.
I'd tell you all about it, but this comment's long enough as it is. However, I've written about some of my journey on a couple of past journal entries, so maybe you could get an idea of what to experience through that. But then again, may not be your cup of tea. Thanks for the congrats, now it's onto the new semester! Just a few more subjects to go.

That's okay!
Yeah, it was the only way I really felt was the best way to kind of come to terms with it I guess. It's weird, to think that 'drawing something' can really help.
Dammmmnn, okay that just puts everything in an entire different perspective haha.

Yeah. That's so true, to keep that in mind at the end of the day I reckon.
I never really thought of it that way haha, I'm probably that person who believes in the simple solution, but it's no surprise why it never really is that way.
