I honestly never had a problem with Joy's design, but seeing this now, I'm quite happy this redesign happened- It looks amazing, great job!

Yeah, Disney - a lot of animation in general, really - has this issue with designing lady characters rather often. And while I've found plenty to like about the original designs, I also find them just really... bland next to how off-the-wall the guys are designed. It's funny, I took several liberties when designing my own personalized emotions (obvious plug is obvious), but actually struggled to find anything to change about the base designs when it came to my Anger and Fear.
I especially like how stylized and pixie-like the limbs on your Joy are, as well as how ghostly and wistful the eyes on your Sadness look. :3 The sort-of "painted" look you seem to have here is also really nice, especially the lineless bits. It kinda makes me wish my brain would allow me to be looser with my art; my works tend to be kinda stiff and too polished for their own good sometimes, lol. Although, little critique here: I would've liked to see more playing around with their overall, basic shapes. Fear and Anger prove that anthropomorphizations abstract concepts like emotions, even human emotions, don't have to necessarily look human. That's just what I would have personally done, though.

Oh boy, sorry, I haven't been active on DA in a long long time, so I'm replying a teeny bit late!
Yeah, although I personally don't find the guys' designs that original either (although it probably has a lot to do with their clothing than their overall design), they do have more life to them. I remember looking at some older designs for the girls, and some of them were way more cartoony, especially for Disgust. It would've been fun to see those on screen, but what can we do, right? :') (Also while I'm at it, your personalized emotions are really really cool! Especially Joy and Fear, aaaah, I love them so much!)
Aaw, gee, thanks! Honestly, the way I decided to go at it had a lot to do with the fact I started drawing Joy at like 2 AM. I'm less harsh with myself when I draw at night so I just let loose.
Haha, yeah, I gotta admit I stayed pretty close to the original designs with these, especially with Disgust, since I was so fond of her design. I hadn't looked at any concept art (besides a pastel drawing of Joy with her old color theme) before hand, so I restricted myself to just pushing the designs a bit more.
Thanks so much for the feedback, by the way! It means a lot!

Well, yeah, the guys designs may not be totally brand new - they are comparable to characters made before - but they are definitely major departures from what could have been just candy-colored cartoony humans, as opposed to the much safer designs of the girls. And yeah, when it comes to movies by big, mainstream studios, the concept art tends to be much more freely creative than the safe, "mass marketable" end results.
(Aaw, thanks! I'm actually surprised that my Joy was one of your favorites, since I had such a weirdly hard time pinning down a design. I'm personally the most pleased with how my Disgust came out.)

Nice job on these. I really like Joy. It kinda bugs me that all the emotions shown in other people's heads are all shaped the same except for their human's hairstyle and their clothes. I always think that each person's emotions would be shaped, appear different from each other in ways that reflect their personalities, like these.

Thank you! Yeah, that's something that bugged me a bit as well, but I figured it was just played off for laughs, so I didn't pay it too much attention while watching the movie. But yeah, I do think Inside Out, while being very enjoyable, didn't do a good job of portraying and humanizing emotions.

I think the reason other people's emotions are shaped exactly like Riley's was for simplicity's sake and because they didn't have time or manpower to make unique designs for characters that would only be there for a few short scenes. It's a great movie but like others there are certain bits that could have been done better.

I think it was more out of convenience than anything else. Coming up with unique designs for characters that appear for only a few seconds isn't all that hard. If they really weren't in the mood for making new designs, they could've just used some of the old designs for Riley's emotions. I mean, it's not like there were that many characters involved in this movie, and Pixar has done movies that include tons of characters with unique designs, like Monster Inc (and it's prequel) or the Toy Story movies. So yeah, I don't think it's because they couldn't, and really because they didn't think it was necessary.

EEEEEEEE I love them!!!
I too was planning on drawing the female emotions eventually.
But I love Sadness, she looks especially in despair
Also did you notice in the movie that they looked kind of fuzzy but then there's a close-up and they're like made of light particles???

Thank yoooou!! Oooh, I'll be looking out for that, then!
Yeah, I noticed that, although it didn't occur to me that it was light particles, and the whole time I was thinking "Why the heck would they be made out of pollen???" X')
