Description ~45K Sofia Pinup Kiriban~

In the past 2 years I always did Anime style Xmas specials featuring Karin-chan, my gallery's Xmas Anime girl. This year I already did a Xmas deviation using a Dolfie doll, which was something new - but what about a realistic Xmas pinup?

Nerdy Note:
For this Xmas special I did something different. I have always been separating shadows and shading effects and compositing them in postwork. That often results in aliasing problems (jagged edges) that are quite tough to fix. So this time I rendered everything in a single pass and setup the shadows params beforehamd instead of adding them later. The bad side is lack of control - I can't see how it will look until it is rendered, and the good side is less aliasing on the picture. Poser shadows really suck.

Figure used here is Vicky4, wearing BatLab's Cangal outfit. Rendered with 2 standard Poser lights with raytraced smoothed shadows.

Now if Santa looked like that I think I'd put a net out not a stocking, Great stuff, know what you mean about shadows have similar trouble with D/S

Thank you! Somehow I think that Poser shadows don't exactly match with the figure size and there are 1-pixel wide gaps close to the edges. Not to mention the "dirty" AO shadows when using IBL + HDRI... O_o

black-Kat-3D-studio In reply to ken1171 [2007-12-21 10:30:44 +0000 UTC]

Your Welcomed. I had a lot of problems getting the shadows working right (never bothered with IBL/HDRI) when working with poser. Now I'm having to learn all over again with DazStudio (No IBL/HDRI) but I think D/S has similar shadow probs as poser

ken1171 In reply to black-Kat-3D-studio [2007-12-21 11:44:42 +0000 UTC]

I wonder why D|S would share technical issues with Poser since both were developed by completely different and independent companies. In addition, DAZ could have done better since Poser was created over 10 years ago, while D|S is pretty recent. Maybe they went cheap since D|S is a freebie...

black-Kat-3D-studio In reply to ken1171 [2007-12-21 11:57:48 +0000 UTC]

For me it works quite well in what I create, it's got a long way to go to compare with poser but being a freebie its great for anyone starting out in 3D espesially if they don't have much money, having said that Daz will get their money by selling their products for D/S good marketing ploy and they admit it

ken1171 In reply to black-Kat-3D-studio [2007-12-21 12:12:08 +0000 UTC]

The only thing that bothers me about D|S is that DAZ is now trying to create incompatibilities on purpose trying to split the Poser market. I as a developer can't see anything good coming out of this. There were a couple of forums out there arguing about the dangers of splitting the market, for I think in the end everybody will loose on this. DAZ wants a market monopoly, and they have been using this kind of tactics from the very beginning and a lot of people got hurt - to include myself.

I suppose that these big companies will try to outdo each other any way they can, just like Bill Gates wanting to rule the compter world but still giving us inferior products

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ken1171 In reply to black-Kat-3D-studio [2007-12-22 23:30:33 +0000 UTC]

That's how I see this D|S freebie - it doesn't even scratch the surface of what you can do with Poser. Without shader nodes D|S sends developers way back to the days of Poser 4 when trying to keep compatibility...

black-Kat-3D-studio In reply to ken1171 [2007-12-23 11:06:13 +0000 UTC]

It will never match up to poser, but if this is the only choice (I'm not forking out another fortune for something better) I'll have to take it, or don't create 3D images anymore, creating means a great deal to me

We are in this gray period of not knowing what will happen to Poser now that it has been sold to Smith Micro. Since 1989 when Poser was created byFractal Designs, it has been sold to MetaCreations --> Curious Labs --> e-Frontier --> Smith Micro...

We can only wait and see, Poser has certainly been bounced about a bit lets hope it don't sink into obscurity

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ken1171 In reply to black-Kat-3D-studio [2007-12-24 21:42:14 +0000 UTC]

With a market size like this, it would be a commercial suicide to stop Poser from being developed. There are probably millions of Poser users around the world, and considering that 3D technical magazines are now starting to include Poser articles, the number should increase considerably in the near future.

I hope that doesn't happen, but they need to get their act together.. I get those mags regularly and they do give away a lot of poser products, mainly from Daz Productions, they are getting are getting more and more fingers in that proverbial pie

3D World magazine (awesome British mag!), more specifically, never cared about Poser but now people started to ask for it. There was even an Anime special edition with Aiko on the cover. And now MOST of the cover CDs come with Poser content, unfortunately nothing I don't already have so far.

Yes your right there I've subscribed to that mag for a few years now plus ''Imagine FX'' that deals more with digital painting etc. I do get a lot of my models from 3d World mag but as you say I already have most of those but occasionally some good stuff comes out

Which again brings me to that old point: why Americans can't create good computer magazines like PC Format (UK), PC Plus (UK) and 3D World (UK)? Most of the articles are about US products and companies, but they are [very well] written by the British...
