Description ~Mecha Pilot~

Now here is one of my latest characters: Mizuno "Spotty" Haruka, the only daughter of a now retired legendary mecha pilot. She is a half-breed between human father and elven mother. She got the 'spotty' nickname from her early pilot academy cadet days, when she was in the shower and one of the other cadets noticed she has a very cute pink spot at an undisclosured place in her body. No matter how much poor Haruka has tried to keep this down, in no time the entire academy was already referring to her as 'spotty' with that annoying smug on their faces. Now three years have passed and Spotty... I mean, Haruka, has proven herself valiant as a mecha pilot in several dangerous missions. She has been where no spotty elf has been before! Space - the elven frontier!

Haruka is my original character design where I used DAZ3D's Aiko as the base figure. I created this outfit and gun entirely in 3DSMAX, based on visual designs from more modern mecha Anime visuals from nowadays. The scene was composed, lighted and rendered in Poser, while postwork was done in PSP.

Thanks for coming by!

Why is this character scary?
I think yours and my characters are different enough.
I don't see much resemblance, except that both are elfs, but even then Haruka is only half-elf anyways.
I am glad I posted my Haruka design last year, or else I might feel like you would imply I copied your character. ^^
No worry on that side, they have something in common, but I don't think they are much alike.

It's scary to me cause it's such a big coincidence.
And the resemblance I see is that they have green hair. Yeah. Kinda lame but it really freaked me out then. And I hope you don't think I copied your character, cause I didn't know about this dude until I scoured your gallery.

Never mind, I don't think your character is that similar to my Haruka. Green has been the color of choice for many of my other character's hair, so it's not such an exlclusive color after all. BTW, Mizuno "Spotty" Haruka is back to my gallery wearing a pink version of that uniform in a brand new sexy walk animation. Please come see her. ^^

Go spotty!

I have to say, you're one of the greatest artists on deviantART. If not the greatest. Of course, this is coming from a stupid wannabe (Me.), so I don't know if that's good or bad, but hey, it's the truth.

You > Everyone.

Wow, thanks, you are very kind!! I'm really happy you are not discriminating my Anime artwork just because it's 3D.
It has been tough to be a 3D Anime artist here and I will need all the support I have find - thanks!

Reminds me of kagome was it from tenchi. I think it was kagome. The shoulder pads really ad depth and variety to the whole outfit.

Hmm, I think Kagome is from Rumiko Takahashi's "Inu Yasha" series. Who else but Takahashi would dare to name a main character with such a hillarious name? LOL
This outfit has some cool details on the side and back, but unfortunately those cannot be seen from this angle. ^^

Kiyone! that was the name i remember now! she had an outfit that followed the same concept, i like yours better though.

Oh, Tenchi Muyo's Kiyone, gotcha. That outfits is more like an interesting mixture of uniform with regular social clothing.
For the design I used here, I conducted a research on the evolution of Anime SciFi uniforms since the 1970's until 2004, and this is what came out.
As opposed to the rather straight old fashion style, modern female SciFi uniforms now often come opened at the chest level as seen here, to reveal the one-piece plugsuit (she's a mecha pilot) she wears under it. As opposed to the Masamune Shirow sexy and often revealing (transparent) style, my version of the plug suit is more like what a woman would feel comfortable wearing. The jacket has some cool details on the side and back, and I will try to show it somehow in a later picture. ^^

Thats cool that you do comprehensive studies, I bet you understand the methods of character design alot better than most people!

Hehehe, I wonder if I do? When I asked for suggestions, people voted for some sort of Sci-Fi soldier outfit, but then I thought that would be so beaten because everybody is doing that sort of outfit. Then I thought of those space pilots, but then again, it would probably end up just like a soldier uniform. And then I finally thought - what if it's a giant mecha pilot instead? They use to have distinguished outfits, and then I went to research what's the fashion nowadays, since I don't like the looks from the 70's and 80's (too straight). When I saw some designs with female jacket opened chested like this, I just thought that's it! ^^

thats great how much research you put into it, turns into your very own style!

I really wonder if I can call it 'my style', since during research I was influenced by many people.
I just wanted to model a new uniform that fits with the current trends and Sci-Fi Anime fashion.
If we were influenced by others, can we really call it 'our' style? I wonder how that works... ^^

Safemilk In reply to ken1171 [2005-12-03 15:00:39 +0000 UTC]

Of course you can, when you are influenced by multiple parties your art takes on a new form all together, sort of a mixture of their styles, I myself have been heavily influenced by Cowboy bebop but that only goes so far as the elongated figures, in trying to emulate CB style faces I ended up with a mix beween tht and Samurai Champloo, so it looks like neither really, thus my style. 3d art is more difficult to establish a style, but i can clearly see differences in your art than other 2d and 3d artists.

whew, ok im off my soapbox now...

I see what you mean. I have always been touchy about originality, but I wonder if something can be created without the influence of others. I mean, there is a chance nothing is really created out of 'nothing'. As they say, if you copy from one it's 'plagiarism', but if you copy from many, then it's now called 'research'.

an interesting point of view. But it depends on whether you copy, or emulate loosely. Also, in drawing especially, the way you originally trained your muscles to draw feeds into your style, no matter how hard you try to copy, your drawings will always have the same feel as your own. A unique curve or stroke defines your style as much as the finished product, no?

In your 2D media with pen and paper, I think so. The process is more organic than 3D modeling, where my lines are not drew, but extended from one vertex to the next. The mechanics are so different, but both 3D and 2D will end with a flat picture trying to express an idea or emotion. Some call it artwork, while some others will call it that only if certain tools were used on the making of it. Everything else lives in the limbo, with about half a dozen labels hanging from it. I am in the latter category.

When I model a character I start with a frontal and profile ref image and do something similar to rotoscopy, I've done a few anime models directly from my drawings, so my 3d takes on the same style as 2d. Strangely enough I did those before I could draw so they look accordingly.

He, I'd love to see your 3D models! I want to see if they have your style, as you said.
It's easy to see such things when seen from a 'outside' person. ^^

I thought you'd like the gun. I designed and built it myself. It's a unique and original design, ideal for "girls with guns" scenes. ^_^
Glad you've liked it

Working on that for a long time, but still lacking a proper male figure. The existing ones have looked either too young or rather too effeminated.

You should just go for overmasculined and rather old! meaning... Dragon Ball Z Sean Connery --the model???

Hey thanks!
I think I already mentioned in the main text all of the programs I used, but here it goes:
1. 3DSMAX for modeling.
2. Poser for scene and character composing, lighting and rendering.
3. PaintShop Pro for postwork.
