St. George Island is one of the barrier islands in the Florida panhandle. These islands are basically piles of sand that collect offshore and parallel to the coastlines worldwide. They are barriers in two ways. From a nature perspective they protect the coastline from hurricanes and other storms and the protected waters between them and the coastline are important habitats for both land and sea life. From the historic human perspective, they are barriers to ships navigation and many have lighthouses. Now they are tourist destinations and Hurricane bait.
