Ooh, darkness wards, huh? I like it. Did they drain so much energy from him because of his connection to the sun now? Maybe he should be using some "light" wards, if those exist.
Also, I'm guessing that they ducked into an open doorway, but this isn't clear; I can't tell from the illustrations or text if the little niche/room they found does or doesn't have a door. I think that the "darkness" wards blinded the creatures or made it impossible for them to get closer, and I'm guessing the only reason that was necessary was because Dean, Sam and Cas couldn't use a physical door to create a magic-less barrier.
