Description Your character is a MARY-SUE because he/she is annoyingly CLICHE

My definition of the Mary-Sue. This is aimed at ONE specific person who will be unlikely to see it and will not understand why it is so because their character is their persona who will 'OH, NEVER DO THAT KIND OF THING'.

Rofl. Purity shit.

*Edit 22/11/10: Hahha, over a year later, someone points out my spelling error-had to change font for that particular word so that it could fit in the stamp and did some other corrections.

There is no such thing as cliche. Cliche is a fancy term for most used archetype. Originality doesn't exist either it really is the best rip off. Lets face it now-a-days every idea is taken. There is no thinking outside the box. Besides believe it or not sometimes a good archetype is a good way to get a template for a good character. Take Harry Potter. He is the legendary hero cliche same with Link from Legend of Zelda. But everybody and i mean everybody loves those characters.Β

Not to mention there are so many "official" definations of marry sue floating around the internet. We change the defination to suit out needs. If she's flawless she's a marry sue if shes flawed she's a sue, if she's beautiful she's a sue, if she's not beautiful she's a sue. Marry sue is a term used to set double standards upon an oc and to bash inexperienced character creators.

Like an old friend of mine. Her OC was a vampire/ghost based off of the Phantom from "Phantom of the Opera," and Sebastian from "Black Butler." My OC never stood a chance against him in a fight. It really made me pissed.

I have a question about Mary-Sue's. So, Mary-Sue's are generally characters that are beautiful, talented, skilled and usually have a dramatic back story.

So how in the world do you write a character that is not a Mary Sue and still make her interesting? I don't want to make my character perfect and good at everything, but I also don't want a character to be ugly, powerless and incompetent.

And is Mary-Sue only an OC in a fandom, or does it apply to your original characters from your own original story?

That's the 'standard' definition of a Mary-Sue, where it is extremely obvious that the character is a Mary-Sue (i.e.: No proper explanation to their (super) powers, appearance and relation to existing characters of a show/anime/game etc). Though this definition is generally used even though there's plenty of sub-categories within the term 'Mary-Sue'. Most of the time, it depends on the person's own perception on what a 'Mary-Sue' is.

Here are some links that might help:
[link] [TVTropes Mary Sue page]
[link] [TVTropes Common Mary Sue Traits]

On the TVTropes Mary Sue page, there are links to the sub-categories of 'Mary-Sue' The Common Traits aren't always there in spotting Mary-Sues, and like I said, it also depends on your own perception of what a 'Mary-Sue' is.

On writing, it will depend on how well you write your character and his/her interaction with other characters. A biography of a character can make it look decent, but the real problem is writing them out in your story. How they react to the situation, their flaws, troubles etc. And it honestly doesn't matter if your character is ugly or pretty. It's also mostly trial and error, everyone makes Mary-Sues in the beginning (I admit that I used to have some myself), the only thing is whether or not you're willing to take critiques and move on from that stage. You don't have to listen to everything and then adjust your character to those specifics, just take note of what is being said to you and then think it through. The thing is not to get upset and rage about critiques, just listen and see if it is logical to your character and if there is really a need to make adjustments (this also depends on how well you've written your character).

Mary-Sue can be Fan-Characters and Original-Characters. It's not limited to just FCs and yes, it does apply to our own original stories as well There must be a degree of logic with your characters.

Thanks for the very descriptive answer, it helped a lot.

The characters I am working on now are for an original story and not a fandom. I do want my main female character to be beautiful and powerful, but not outshine everyone else and save the day in each situation. There are main characters who will get center stage, but the cast of characters are supposed to play off each other. Of course I want to create interesting and/or tragic pasts for some characters so that they don't all come from the same easy background, and to give them reasons for their actions.

It seems to me that a large part of Mary-Suedom is that every other character loves her no matter what (Bella Swan anyone?) and that any flaws he or she has is seen as endearing, making it not a real flaw at all.

Thanks for the TVTropes link, I love that site!

This is so true..
One of my friends in real life has a BUTTLOAD of Mary-Sues and it drives me up the wall because she expects me to like them but URGH she gets all her story ideas from anime and there's NOTHING original about them at all. =/ And whenever she RP's all her characters do is kill people (but her Mary-Sues can't be killed, cuz they're immortal guardian demon-angels!!11!)

Reminds me of a NWN: Hordes of the Underdark I read recently, but the character was more like and "Anti-sue" :/

Kenzeryuu In reply to waterfaerie [2010-04-03 03:54:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, if the character's still cliche, then it probably still is in the general definition of Mary-Sue.

Just under the sub category of Anti though

SilentCartoon [2009-09-18 13:32:32 +0000 UTC]

Being cliche is all a state of mind, maaan. *Goes all philosophical.

But in seriousness, I agree. I mean, sometimes there are cliches that WORK and don't look Mary-Sueish, but thats when the author pulls it off in the right way.

Other times? No. Just -no-.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kenzeryuu In reply to SilentCartoon [2009-09-18 13:37:37 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. I agree that cliches are one of the most inevitable things but overusing the cliches to the point that 'oh, ok. This will happen next etc etc', everything becomes so...expected. There's nothing interesting left because the character is so predictable.

Thus that character fails and is Mary-Sue. D: Well, this is my definition of them at least; since there are a whole variety of sub-categories of Sue floating around XD.

Thanks much for the comment.

Well then, I feel better, because my main character isn't a Mary Sue then by your definition! :'D!

....I haven't been using the term Mary-Sue lately. I've been saying "Bella-Complex" XD
