Description I did this one on illustration board and used a different technique than usual. I first did a light watercolor wash to get the tones up quicker, and then I used graphite pencil to finish it off and put in the details.

i'm honestly in awe of your ability to capture realism.. i always look
up to people who can master drawing elderly faces! All the details..

Thank you very much!
The weird thing is, that drawing and painting older people (especially males) is far more easy than painting, say, a young woman. There are more interesting details and wrinkles to work with to make the skin look realistic. On a younger person the skin would be very smooth and hard to keep from looking "plastic" and uniform.

how long did this piece take?

i've never heard of this technique, either... i'm afraid of trying o.o

Keriberrygirl In reply to gwendydd [2005-06-17 19:33:51 +0000 UTC]

Dont be afraid to try!! Its a super great technique. If you want, just start on a smaller scale. A really helpful tip is to do a pic of something that had good texture, like a wrinkly face, that has something for the watercolor layer to have fun with. I strongly advise you not to do anything that has large areas with smooth gradients. At least not for your first couple of trys. That is the toughest part. So once you get better at the technique, you can do whatever you want with it. ^__^ OH! and dont forget to do the watercolor layer a few shades lighter than you want the finnished product to be, cause you still want to have a chance for the pencil layer to give it that finnish. and thats it! Good luck with it, and be sure to post what you do so i can see!!!

i think i'll try, after the exam
just one question... exactly how much of the drawing did you do with watercolour? i mean, what parts
thank you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Keriberrygirl In reply to gwendydd [2005-06-18 23:56:57 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! Go for it! I used the watercolor on the whole thing. The light parts, i just did REALLY REALLY lightly, cause there were no "perfectly" white areas to do. But if there are some super white areas on the one you want to do, just dont put any watercolor on those parts.

This is an astonishing drawing!!! Even at close range, it still has the look of real skin. You put alot of detail and emotion into the eyes, its perfect. You have very fine attention detail, right down to the eyelashes and skin imperfections, you captured the look of weathered skin VERY well!

The full view shows the little glitchy things from the paper texture and the pencil. Reminds me on my own. He he.. Makes me feel good, actually. *is still new in the field, but will beat you*

Awesome facial details. I'm still yet to get there.

Whoah... People used to always get discouraged when they saw my drawings because they thought thiers were crap compared to mine... I'm getting a feeling for how they're feeling right now lol... youre work is amazine... i thought that, or should i say, hoped that your talents were limited to just painting, but you have proved otherwise... I'm actually still wondering weather you just got a photo and did some photoshop filters to make it look like it was a drawing...

You are amazing, neigh... spectacular... i could only dream of reaching that level of detail and realism, and people thought i was a master at that. lol youre skill is unimaginable. i really am quite enviouse. (but dont get me wrong, i absolutly love your work, its amazing!)

watercolour washes... that's an interesting idea, I'll have to try it, and spend more time on my stuff and try people too... really, reading your responses other people's comments has been more helpful than any art lesson I've ever had
I really like how you've just focused on his eyes. All of your work is amazing... you're incredibly talented, and I'm sure you've got a wonderful future as an artist on the way... I'm getting lost for words now, I'll just have to hurry up and add this one to my favourites then!
