I always wondered if Sunset Shimmer, reformed and trying to be good, would go back to Equestria, given the opportunity, and try to make amends with her old mentor…and how that would play out. Maybe something like this?This isn’t a spoiler for Rainbow Rocks in any way, just my silly little piece of headcanon.

Very cute! I guess that can be seen as the sort of relationship they have. Celestia definitely saw Sunset as family, as after Sunset started to experiment with dark magic, Celestia looked sadly at a stained glass mirror with Nightmare Moon. She later also kept the mirror in her room, to remind her of her failure with Sunset, and wait at her possible return.
