Over 700 hours of work went into creating this costume including sculpting/fabrication, freehand embroidery on my sewing machine (Over 130 hours of embroidery and 10,000 yards of gold metallic thread) and hand made eyebrow and beard lace pieces. It also features Japanese brocade from Kyoto on the back panels as well as on the front of the coat. The main blue fabric on the coat is Dupioni silk.

This original design I came up with took about a month of research and planning and I was inspired by Edo period Japanese Shogun clothing and Japanese Dragon wood carvings. I wanted to incorporate the Twin Dragon motif into this costume so it's seen coiling itself around the bow and on the belt. Also the bow was designed to look as if the arrows were being fired out of the dragon's mouth. All the balls on the costume are reminiscent of dragon hands - Eastern dragons are prominently shown holding pearls or orbs in their hands signifying their endless pursuit of wisdom.

The look of the coat was inspired by Kataginu - a traditional coat worn by the warrior class and I exaggerated the shoulders to give him a more commanding silhouette. The incorporation of the ropes on the costume is based on Shimenawa (sacred rope) which signifies a person of importance. The helmet was Kabuto or Samurai helmet inspired with the horn shapes derived from Japanese Dragon horns. I tried as best I could to retain original elements of Hanzo's clothing such as his pants, top, quiver and shoes while making the design very much my own.

I also made sure to keep the Overwatch aesthetic in mind when designing this - mixing futuristic elements as well as traditional elements seen in the clothing and the armor. Finally the kanji on his helmet reads from right to left, Ryu Shogun Shimada Hanzo (Dragon Warlord Shimada Hanzo). In modern Japanese the simplified version of the kanji Ryu is used but in keeping with the spirit of being Edo-period inspired, I used the traditional Kanji.

So much love went into creating this costume and I'm so proud to have it complete! Hope you guys love it!
