Description I guess I took this before going to work, it’s obviously after a shower. I believe this was the day my parents left to take a trip to South Carolina. My grandmother lives down there along with my aunt and her kids. My two boy-cousins live with them still and my girl-cousin lives with her husband and their son.

My parents decided to move down there last year. My cousin (the one with the family) was living in South Carolina and my grandma and aunt and the whole crew wound up moving there from California a year or two ago I guess. I can’t really remember when it all happened, to be honest. But the economy is so bad and it’s so fucking expensive to live on Long Island that my parents decided they wanted to go down there, too. They could get, like, a mansion for the money they’d get from selling our house here.

Well that’s nice.

I mean, don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with the area down there, but I’m not done with New York yet. I live outside the cultural capital of the world and I’m trying to get an art degree--tell me why I’d want to leave at such a critical time in my education and career.

My parents kept changing their plans on me, saying they’d be gone by the summer, then, no, gone by Christmas, or maybe we’ll just have the house on the market by Christmas and see what happens. It was like pulling teeth to get them to stop charging me rent so that I could pay for college and they finally caved and agreed to pay my car insurance for me because it was obvious that I couldn’t afford it. I’m not saying that it’s no big deal--I’m absolutely grateful for that--but it’s like, great, now you’re just going to abandon me in New York?

They got really offended at the idea that they were “abandoning” me, they say they aren’t. THERE IS AN OPEN INVITATION FOR ME TO COME. And they want me to come with them. But seriously? Are you fucking serious?

Last year this was causing me a fair amount of stress and panic attacks and I just didn’t understand why they couldn’t just wait for me to at least get my Associate’s, because I want to continue school in the city so I’d at least be trying to live there anyway, but jesus. It’s been pretty awful. They finally caved and decided they’d wait for me but still guilt trip me about it. It really made me feel pretty horrible about myself. I know I started college late, but I’m trying. You can’t just wait for me? I know I’ve put you out by not getting this over with three or four years ago but you can’t just give me a fucking hand here?

So anyway they’ve gone down there a couple times to visit and scout houses. Both times they gave me like a week or two in advance to ask if I wanted to come and I was like HELLO I HAVE WORK. You can’t just ask me that soon and expect me to come. Then they give me all kinds of shit that I’m not visiting with the family and I’m just like, ugh. Are you serious? Seriously serious? And now of course they keep trying to make me come while I have school. They don’t realize that it’s ~college~ and you fail if you miss more than a couple days. They just don’t get it. My mom went to college, like, thirty years ago and my dad never bothered. They just don’t understand.

PARENTS JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND.

Unfortunately, parents never understand, darling. I guess they've forgotten what was like to be someone else's child. BTW, I absolutely adore this pic.

I love the photo. I'm sorry about the bullshit, that's really tough to deal with. Since they gave you that bit of freedom, try not to think about them and just focus on your school work and getting through college. That's the important thing, and since they kind of gave the OK to go ahead with it, don't let anything hold you back.

I really hope everything works out. School is too expensive to just leave and and move to another state. Keep your focus ^_^ This is a great photo!

Seriously! And I keep asking my parents "Why would I want to get an art degree from South Carolina when we live an hour from New York City?!" Makes no sense!
