I skipped out on the Nintendo DS games, but it's obvious that, taking or not taking into account their evolutions, these Pokemon are at least better than 4th Gen and even Johto.
Chikorita is a llama lima bean thing, Totodile is uncreative and can't get way with it like Squirtle could, but Cyndaquil is still unique.
The whole 4th Gen starters/evos sucked.

Snivy/Tsutarja has decent-looking evolutions, some may call them grass Dragonairs/Milotics, but it's much better than sprouting Sceptiley legs or becoming a grass Typloshion, Linoone thing.
Tepig/Pokabu's evos suck hardcore, but Mijumaru rounds out the bunch by having a lulzy epic final evolution that reminds me of the Magikarp level 20 effect.

Still waiting for improved gameplay, and more than just good starters. And more straightforward-looking Pokemon trainers. They should stop looking like trendy privileged European backpacker youth.

Dang, Pokabu's evo is a lot cooler, but I've always been obsessed with Mijumaru, and I don't mind Mijumaru's evo that much, but then I also want Hiyakki, and I'm worried that if I pick Mijumaru, I won't get Hiyakki. But even if I could still get Hiyakki, Mijumaru's already my water guy. I guess I still like the other monkeys, though. I'm torn between Mijumaru and Pokabu.
