Description This is a picture of Jane in traditional samurai attire. Nothing else to say about this picture exept I did lots of editing of the line art in photoshop with the Pen Tool. Looking up Japanese symbols sucks!

I find this pretty offensive and the anatomy is pretty awful. I don't really get why people are commenting saying this is good.

Why are you offended, because she has big tits? That's just feminist, it's pretty much the same as racist, he is the artist, so what if she has big boobs? So what if there are other ways of making art sexy? What YOU consider art is invalid, it is not your art to claim, it is not yours to decide whether it is art or not, it's the artists. Instead of coming here posting negative shit you either praise his efforts or you tell him how he can get better, what I find offensive is people like you, coming in and throwing someone down, he put effort into this I'm sure, how would you like if someone hundreds of times more proficient than you like Myazaki came in your deviant art and said "Your work is shit, the face is all wrong, what's wrong with her chin?" You think he'd do that as a respectful artist? No, he'd comment on what you need to improve, avoiding insulting you so you can flower into a better artist. I'm honestly sickened at your attitude.

I commented that in 2009, and I am embarassed by it. I had forgotten it even existed, and don't know why I picked some random picture to comment on when there are thousands like this.

Speaking as an older, wiser, person I wouldn't call it offensive per say, and I wouldn't just insult the piece and leave like that (not that Kevin-Generic should or would care, but sorry, man. You didn't deserve random vitriol.).Β

However this kind of art DOES perpetuate harmful attitudes about women and beauty (reducing women to boobs, objectification, big boobs and skinny body being the only way to be attractive). What i meant by "there are other ways to make art sexy" was that you can draw sexy characters without objectifying them.

That said, this is clearly fetish art, and so things get a bit muddy. Of course people should be able to draw things they find attractive or sexy. It's unfortunate that when you look at the big picture, and you have thousands of people drawing things like this, and it adds up to a culture where women are defined by their bodies and sexiness and men are not. You can see this on deviant. Pay attention to how much women are sexualised and objectified in deviations compared to men. The difference is stark.Β

That said, I was not right to insult this artist about it. It's a complicated subject and I don't really have an answer.

TLDR: Sorry for being a douche about it in those old comments. But also feminism and racism are not the same and you should maybe read up a little on it?

I'm glad you're a more mature person now and that you're embarrassed by what you wrote, it means you know what you did was unnecessary behavior. Now, regarding to your comment, it's pretty obvious WHY the female body is more objectified than the male body, a woman is a construct of delicate, gorgeous curves, while the man is nothing but thick broad lines, the desire to draw the female body is twice as strong than to draw a male body, a male body is nothing but muscle and task efficiency compacted into a biological robot, the female however was built in a more detailed way, in a more appealing way. Their curves and shapes were created to attract, to lure others, to give out warmth and emotional safety, unlike the rigid combination of shapes that is the male body. Your comment is also wrong if I might say so, men are extremely sexually objectified, even more then women, some claim barbie is an surrealistic role model, due to her incredibly perfect physical shape, setting it as a "male" vision of women, I find this wrong, have you ever seen he-man, action man, superman, batman... I could go on forever, unrealistic sexualized role models for young boys are nothing but muscle and broad shoulders, the same way you may consider this drawing "harmful", do you not consider he-man (the best example) exactly the same thing? could a man BE that muscular? Could one's shoulders be so broad and spine so straight?

Everyday males are subjected to this just as females are, while a woman might feel uncomfortable for seeing an underwear add with incredibly well sculpted women because she does not meet the standards, How do you think a man feels when he sees men like james bond, superman, Thor from the movie? All great examples of an overly well shaped man. Β Women are more objectified than men because they were MADE into more complex and beautiful creatures than men, I find it hard to believe people don't notice this. Instead of shaking off the small differences, you should look at the big similarities before telling me to read on it, if I said it it was for a reason, what is racism you ask? It's (very basically) despising someone of another Hue or place, believing they are inferior, and that you are superior by birthright, Feminism lost it's bases of equality through the ages, all you see from feminism is women believing they are more than men BECAUSE they are men. Just because you don't see how we can be sexualized into offensive matters doesn't mean we aren't, we just chose to look the other way, why? Because we are objective, the same way we objectify a woman we objectify one another among men, I don't get offended when they show off He-man to me, he's completely unrealistically manly and broad (which is what most men search for) and yet I do not call them demanding them to find another way to express his heroism, the same way I don't ask this particular artist to reduce the size of her breasts, REGARDLESS of our freedom of speech, which both me and you are entitled to, it is in no way our job NOR our RIGHT to censor his drawing.

The big picture here is that both genders are sexually explored, men more than women, though this applies more to real life, men are often used by their sexual weakness and allot of women seek advantage of it, men are also at fault for objectifying women more than they should. Β Men simply chose to ignore the obvious exploitation. For the record, I never said racism and feminism were the same, I said they were PRETTY much the same, I respect their freedom and opinion, but that doesn't mean I approve, not that my approval matters. I hope you one day see things from my eyes, I was raised in a family of famous artists, though my skills are far from good or perfect I understand the world of art more than most, On canvas, everything is an object, lamps, fruits, men AND women.

I apologize for commenting on such an old post, if that bothers you, I simply do not approve of insults towards someone else's art, it is something I find completely disgusting, it's one thing if it's a productive comment, it's another if it's just a blatant comment. I do not mind if someone comes in, and says my drawings are shit GRANTED, they tell me why, that, I can work with, I can improve, and I can evolve, being un-evolved primates who just throw shit at each other helps no one.Β

TL;DR

There is none.

use-the-force In reply to kirihama [2013-09-15 15:58:20 +0000 UTC]

Glad we're on the same page about insults vs constructive criticism, but you have still misunderstood a lot of things about feminism and gender equality.

Men are not sexualised to the extent women are. They're just not. Men can be IDEALISED, but for the most part they are not made into solely sexual objects. Those musclebound male characters you're talking about are created as a power fantasy by men, for men, not as a sexual fantasy for women.Β

This guy explains it way better than me:

www.escapistmagazine.com/video…

If you're interested in video games at all, Jim Sterling is a great way to get introduced to feminism.

Of course it's still POSSIBLE for men to be sexualised in media, (have you seen any of the gender-switched parodies of Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines'? That is what male objectification looks like, for reference). It's just that it doesn't actually happen to anything like the same extent as it does for women.

And women are not naturallyΒ more visually sexual or attractive than men. That perspective is created by our culture, which obsesses over female sexiness.Β

And no, you don't get upset about He-Man's look because you as a man are not oppressed because of your gender. You might be in some other ways, if you are a person of colour, or gay or in some other way disprivileged. Its the same reason it's dumb for white people to say "but i don't get offended by the word 'cracker'!" when a black person says they're offended by the n-word. Of course you're not offended by 'cracker', you are not oppressed because of your race, you are not made to feel inferior about your skin colour, of course it's not going to bother you when someone points out you're white in a negative way.

Surely you would agree that women have been oppressed in the past, EVEN IF you don't believe it still exists now (which it does, but some people take a while to believe that).Β

And as for feminism, I can tell you that it is NOT about elevating women above men. I understand why you'd think that, because feminism is demonised and misunderstood in popular culture, but I am a feminist, and I know a lot about it, and that is not what it's about. It's a common misconception, so don't feel bad, but I would try reading some feminist blogs to try and understand it better. True feminism wants to make things better for everyone. That includes men's issues, like the extreme social pressure to be hyper masculine, which harms a lot of boys and men who don't live up to that and make themselves miserable trying to. And of course, it tries to do the same for women and people of other genders.

kirihama In reply to use-the-force [2013-09-19 00:38:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm really tired so don't expect a lengthy reply from me as our previous ones. True, being a white male I might lack some vision in the world that was created below me by our God awful society that shoves those with money and power above the rest. But I do know my share of things as I have been a victim of racists, (I'm only half white despite my very pale skin) and bullies, I know what it feels like to be thrown down, granted I always had a strong personality that allowed me to fight back rather than staying there, taking it. I agree with allot of what you say, I won't be specific because again, I'm really tired but I still do believe women were in fact built to be more appealing than men, I say this not through the eyes of a man but through the eyes of an artist, ignoring my personal taste. When I see or draw a male body I see an anatomically perfect design, the broad shoulders, the muscular frame, to me it represents strength, and power, just like our society is, males on top (Sadly of course). When I see a female body, all I see is beauty in the curves, the chest, the hips, all of this, to me personally, represents perfection in beauty, while men represent perfection in utility, bare in mind this is how I see the world. I do support the fundamental Ideas of feminism, don't get me wrong, I feel like I explained myself poorly, equality is good, but at the same time, I don't want it, now hear me out. I don't like treating a woman the same way I treat a man, I would never punch a woman granted it wasn't a life threatening situation, I will always open the door to women and not to men, it's a different kind of respect that doesn't come with equality, I'm not saying I don't like equality, I'm saying I don't like aspects of it. Like ANY group, feminism is judged according to it's extremists, as it happens in christianity, when extremists come off as offensive, brute men or women, or in the muslim religion, where people automatically assume they are all terrorists, feminism is no different, I strongly believe allot of women are giving feminism a bad name, exagerating, I had this one woman, who happened to be behind me, I opened the door and held it open politely, as I would always do, but I didn't do it to be shout at as she did, assuming I assumed she was powerless and defenseless, this is offensive to me honestly, and the thing is there aren't just a few extremists, it's a whole bunch of them, man haters who hate men for being men, thankfully we don't feel oppressed by the reason you stated, we indeed are on top of the food chain, so it's hard to poke at this social group. It's not my fault allot of men are driven by power and greed (granted this happens on women too), And I dislike it when extremist feminists address me as if I was born scum for simply baring a male set of genitalia, the world is a complex system, where the weak are eaten by the strong, there is no doubt about this, yes, women have been oppressed for years, there is no questioning it, is it happening nowadays? Yes it is indeed, and it's not that uncommon, but women are hitting with the same coin now, attempting to oppress males unsuccessfully due to our disgusting amount of pride, generating a war in between extremists, I've dated a feminist once, she fought for everyone's rights, not just women's, she believed everyone deserved equal chance, and made sure others came before her, especially when in disadvantage, I dislike the word feminist, I believe Equalists is a much better word, I'm white, Only my mother is white, the rest of my family is black, from the deepest hearts of africa (I'm not joking), and when I fight for something, I fight for everyone, whites, blacks, coloreds, men, women, old, young, sentient and non-sentient, I dislike the word feminism because it refers to women's rights, rather than everyone's rights. Do I support gay marriage? I couldn't care less about it, let them do what they want, it's their life, do I support Racism? I do not as it limits the freedom of those of different ethnic origins, do I support gay adoption? Again, it's their life, I couldn't care less what they do or don't do, do I support a shouting woman who believes she is superior to all men? No, the same way I don't support a man doing the equivelent.

I lost my train of thought, I'm not feeling well so excuse me for any possible incoherence you might find, Depression is a harsh mistress and she does not leave me be. Do not be offended by anything I'm saying, as I am not offended by anything you say, even if not the same, I respect your opinion and your right to have it.

To me, my perfect view of society are genderless creatures as I often portray in my drawings, most of them look male but that's simply because I rarely draw the female body. from the bust down, I do ADORE neck bones, such perfection.

Well, as far as the blades go, I do have to agree that they are a little too long to be ninjatos but then what are they? [link] that is a ninjato and this [link] is a katana .... if its not a kinjato then what is it?.... As for the deamon thing... thats all you, I didnt know all deamon women had gigantic breasts. So if she gets wounded and goes into the deamon form.. than what form is she in now?... Ill leave it at that because there is no point in us pouting about little differences all day. Especially when samurai stoop to the level of mimicing characters from terminator movies.

I'd like to apologize to everyone for not being constructively critical. The way that I phrased my previous comment was a little harsh I suppose. I didn't mean to say that your artwork sucked as if it were fact. I was just trying to express my opinion but it seemed to come out in an unconstructive and vicious manner. I do apologize for that and now I will try to express my opinion in a more professionally helpful way.
First of all I was very offended by the title of this artwork. I was searching for pictures of samurai when I stumbled upon this work. I immediately felt misled. The most important thing to a samurai is his sword. The swords that are depicted are not katanas, which is the traditional samurai sword, they are actually ninja-to. A samurai would never disgrace himself by wielding a ninja-to. Secondly, the armor worn by this so called, "samurai," is not necessarily incorrect but I feel that the lack of clothing is not appropriate for the background chosen. The background appears to be a low quality photograph of a winter scene. Of course, I'm only judging that this is a winter scene by the lack of leaves on the trees. The foreground, "Jane," does not fit into the background as the foreground seems to be done with something similar to MS Paint. If you bought photoshop for works like this perhaps you should've considered using MS Paint and Image Ready. This would have saved you a good amount of money still leaving you with the ability to create this sort of art. The things that can be done in Paint include the obvious line art and paint bucket. Image Ready would easily allow you to place your anime image over a photograph of your choice. The solid colors created with paint bucket could be improved upon with hand shading done with spray can. Shading is a very important aspect in art. It is more aesthetically pleasing and would perhaps help your viewers to further enjoy your artwork.
Lastly, there are a few issues I have with the breasts. First is the obvious issue with size. Even though it is common to see women in anime with oversized breasts I feel that this is just taking it too far. For starters, just one of her breasts in significantly larger than her head or any other of her body parts for that matter. Realistically, how would she ever dream of defending herself with those swords, yet alone stand up straight. She is depicted here with an severely unproportional body and an impossible posture. The last issue with the breasts would be the bandages that are covering them. Why are there bandages? Did she recently have implants or did she just attempt to defend herself? If the answer to that is implants then that makes me question the time frame. If she from the feudal Japan era, how could she get implants? Or is she just trying to imitate a samurai in a modern day? I really, really believe that this depiction of a female is entirely too chauvinistic.
I hope that you can use these constructively critical comments to better your artwork in the future. Once again I'd like to apologize to everyone for my previous comment. I hope this helps to better explain my opinion, so now maybe you can explain just exactly why her breasts are so big.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kevin-Generic In reply to philly [2004-12-11 16:05:06 +0000 UTC]

First the blades, they are clearly to long to be Ninja-to blades, also the handle it to long. In adition Ninja-to blades are not dual weaponed. As for her attair women often bind their bodies with bandages and cloth throught history.

As for her breasts, she is part demon and her body type would not be that or classic humans. She would be granted better balance, speed and skill in addition to the evolution of the demon race she would also be able to be uneffected by the extra weight.

As for defending herself it is often a mistake to underestimate someone by the way they look, and if she ever does get slashed/stabbed/cut she could go into her demon form (much like a partialy liquid complex form and shrug off all wounds which you can see in the comic).
