It's a bit complicated. Basically I created a checker pattern in Photoshop and layered a fibers filter and a bunch of different textures on top of and below it. I just kept messing around with it until I got something I liked. ^_^

indeed, it does give her more of a gloomy atmosphere instead of just using white as a highlight.

I really like the background too, the texture make the whole thing pop out.
