Description
DC started their tradition of line wide reality changing events with "Crisis on Infinite Earths" in the 80s. Lots of heroes died fighting the big baddie, The Anti-Monitor, who wanted to destroy the whole Multiverse. For Superman it was the start of a series of changes. Supergirl was killed by the Anti-Monitor, the Multiverse became an "Onlyverse" and several heroes just "went away", including the Golden Age Superman, Kal-L.
Later a team spearheaded by John Byrne, rebooted Superman's origin and backstory, changing everything. Superboy, Supergirl, the different hues of Kryptonite, Superman's connection with the Legion and his role as a founder of JLA, it was all retconned away... Byrne said his version would be "...Less of a SUPERman and more of a superMAN."
It was only the beginning of DC's reboots and relaunches, Superman's origins were changed again with "Birthright" and again with "Secret Origins"... And then came "The New 52"...
