Description Uhh... I think this is where this should go. Any suggestions on category are more than welcome.

This is a lil' excercice I set out to accomplish. Could I create the illusion of flatness using a three dimensional object? (as opposed to a flat object looking 3-d, a'la Trompe L'eoil)

I used circles and lines, because it is more apparent when they do not match a correct perspective, and wanted to see if I could fool the eye into thinking that two non-straight lines were one straight line. The same for the circles.

Process:
I placed the "triangle" in the front, in front of two mirrors, set at a 90 degree angle from each other, the corner facing me. Then, I traced the reflections on the mirrors, using a dry-erase marker. The lines were transferred to tracing paper, and finally to illustration board.

When viewed at the correct angle (the larger image), the image looks like a flat object, resting on a surface. Otherwise (the smaller image) It looks distorted.

Materials:
Gouache and Watercolor on Posterboard, mounted using crazy glue...

Was this for a class?

Ahhh gouache... that sure does bring back memories; mixing mixing mixing, oops no wrong color, gotta add more orange, mixing mixing...

I think you have accomplished a sense of depth and perspective very well...i had to do similar things in college with a box drawing...not easy to do.
this really looks good and the design itself lis very cool !

brilliant little experiment raven!
I'm a little off anyway, especially this early... so I think it doesn't look completely flat.. but almost. The smaller one definetely looks like it is folded slightly inward, and the large one a little outward.

this is so great though! a grouping of 6 in a frame would be excellent hanging on a wall.. instant hypnosis for your any guests in your house

This is incredibly good-looking. You definately acchieved the flat look; a first glance at the picture and I thought it was some kind of board game or something. Certianly something very euclidian.

Favourite.

Maybe I'm weird but it doesn't look completely flat..
And I'd just stare at it for a loooooooooong time! Really good piece.

Yes, it looks flat to me. Thoiugh it baffles me to see why anyone wanted to do something like this. Looks like I'm not the only one who has too much time on his hands.

i think it worked out rather well....it looks flat to me....definetly an interesting concept too....to make something 3D flat instead of the other way around.
