Gradient background? You mean that "crossing" between green and red? I just make (by pen) green colour on top and red at the bottom and yellow between them and use blur, I can't make so awesome bg full of details like you

Mainly with the Brush tool. And the Water tool too, yeah. 8D You can use "Water" to smudge colours.
