Description "Sittin' in the morning sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' comes
Watchin' the ships roll in
Then I'll watch them roll away again"
~The Dock of the Bay, Otis Redding

Although Chiefton is not a coastal city, it does have a lively scene of water sports enthusiasts.

After the mines in the vicinity where depleted and the casino business took hold, most of the old shafts where deliberately collapsed, officially to prevent adventurous tourists from getting lost in them. Over the decades, the remaining craters filled up in the tropical, rain laden clime of the area and thus created Lake Chinokk, named after the aboriginal tribe that used to live here.

Since the weather is mediterranean to tropical all year round, the rental shops for boats, SCUBA gear and other water related fun make very good business, feeding whole families in their second or third generation already.

It's a nice simple piece. Makes sense that otters be running the biz

(Derp, the music guy is actually named Otis Redding, not Ottis… musta been a Freudian slip there   )

Thank you. Yeah, originally I had wanted to make it a seal, but found it very hard to make it discernible wit the flippers hanging invisibly over the edge. I'm sure tho' that all kinds of (semi-)aquatic animals are found around the lake. E.g. I could imagine beavers being involved with building the docks and flood walls

Hmm. What kind of jobs would penguins do? O_o besides ice rink maintenance

Serving ice cream comes to mind

But actually there are no limitations, if at all certain animals have affinities to certain areas of work. So I'd say instead of being only butlers or figure skaters like in the cartoons, they could just as well be, say, car mechanics or math professors. And actually, most penguins live in temperate regions (like Galapagos) instead of the antarctic.

And there is no reason why a penguin should not be able to run a SCUBA shop as well as an otter can… besides the difficulties constructing a diving mask for a beak would present

As long as they have the hands for it I've seen your drawings on the bird peeps, I can't imagine them being mechanics when their pinkie finger would end up in uncomfortable positions while under a car x_x

Aw well, the wings of penguins are stumps anyway. I guess in this scenario it would be kinda logical for them to have evolved more or less normal hands out of those. Other birds who are still able to fly of course are another thing, they would easily get their wings wedged in tight spaces and such.

Good thing you mention that. I guess I will need to think this through a bit more. Probably wing-bearers do in fact not take manual work often, but the invention of sophisticated tools to extend their reach comes to mind as well

Another thing I could think of would be the willing clipping of longer feathers to make life more manageable, assuming said avian is okay with being grounded of course.

Also, power gauntlets anyone?

O I don't think any birds in this world would like to voluntarily give up flight for better manual dexterity. Wouldn't work for bats either. After all, it would be like wantonly breaking your legs to better fit into you working spot…

But power gloves, or perhaps even remote controlled robotic aids, would be a good idea I actually toyed with in my head already. That would be a good example of the light sci-fi that's supposed to be in my world. What I'm trying to figure out for myself now is how they would have managed before electronics and miniaturization were advanced enough. They must have had some weird looking instruments in olden times 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Just the feathers, I didn't mean fingers literally XP

On the aspect of bats. I did read a webcomic before that showed how they could possibly wear clothes with that membrane; they wore wraparound clothes with small holes punched in the membrane to allow the clothes to hitch together. Slightly affected flying ability, but otherwise still manageable

I suppose the birdies could have a workstation that had joystick controllable hands or something, for those who need really fine work done. Those already exist, albeit in a much clunkier form.

Ney, I didn't think you meant they should clip off their fingers. But giving up flight would be for the birds like giving up to walk for others. After all, they go to great lengths to retain flightability even with clothes on…

I have looked at how bat membranes actually work and I think I can make it work without any permanent body modifications. What I really need there now is a good idea how the hands will work on top of the wings… that, and to practice birds in general, I only have a fraction of the experience with them of what I already have in drawing catses and the like ^~^

That said, you can't tell me what comic that was with the bats in it, can you

inhuman-comic.com/mitecloths.g… the comic is called Inhuman. Been reading it for years scifi stuff, this pic is old though.
