Description Materials: Prismacolor pencils on black paper

Time: 5-7 days

I found this image a while back on the cover of a Natural History magazine. I wanted very badly to do a recreation of it but I wasn't sure how to go about the process without having to use a lot of black. I found some black paper, probably left over from the figure drawing class, last term and decided to experiment with it. I really like the way that it turned out.

I asked permission from the photographer before I could use this image. Mr. Mark Dumbleton takes gorgeous photographs of African wildlife. He was so kind as to let me work with his photograph of a leopard cub seen here [link] It really helped me with head shape as well as lighting. Having to work backwards was a really different experience than usual

Go check his work out at markdumbleton.com

It's my birthday so I felt that submitting it today was as good as any. I've been so busy with what the anatomy and psychology classes have to offer this term so I haven't much time to do anything else.

One more thing, this picture was scanned and edited by for your viewing pleasure

I hope that you enjoy

Thank you
You don't have to be sorry, I know that you are busy.
What is with your phone? I send texts and it's like a black hole comes and eats them up.

I don't know what's going on with it. Either people are opening them or deleting them, or maybe it was because we had to get more minutes for it.

I just bought my own phone though, and my mom is going to pick it up and get me a minutes card. I'll text you my new phone number.

Okay. I'll have to recharge the stupid thing so I can get it.
That's great that you have your own phone. I'm sure it will be better than sharing the one.

If I had not known any better, I would swear this was a photograph when I first saw it until I read the description....

Beyond that, I'm at a lost for words how awesome this is. Truly amazing job L. Bravo.

This is so beautiful! It's enjoyable to draw on black isn't it?

Say, no problem with scanning? Because whenever I tried to scan black the quality is heavily reduced... If you got some tips to share I'd be delighted!

Thank you! I didn't think that the color pencils would show up so well on the black paper. It is really enjoyable to work with it, more so than white. There's something intimidating about drawing on a blank white piece of paper compared to another background color.

To be honest I did have a few problems scanning it. The process was a matter of finding the right scanner and giving it further editing to make the image more clear. I would not recommend using an all-in-one scanner/printer because it is simply not a good scanning tool, the picture turned out kind of foggy and very low quality. I tried to use the scanner at the college that I go to, an Hp, but that one has some sort of damage that causes it to run a blue line through the image.

I gave the drawing to to see if his scanner would do a better job. His scanner made the image turn out a little more red than the original. It needed further editing. I believe he used Photoshop CS1 to tone down the red and add further contrast. The only other place that I've gotten good quality scans in the past is Office Depot. You can take whatever pictures you want in and they'll scan them for you and put them on your flash drive. The only downside is that you have to pay for them. I hope this helps.

Yeah, doing a background on white is somewhat frustrating because there are so many space.

I see.. I only have this one scanner, the scanner+printer type.. never know it's not as good as the only scanner type! When I tried it got some lines too.

Mm, that's bad, I can't really edit pictures, really bad at it. I will try photographing the picture next though, hope it works.

It's really helpful, thanks!

It's funny how you can have the same surface in the same dimensions and the one that is black is always going to feel smaller than the white one.

I've always had problems with taking photos of pictures. They turn out worse than the scanned pictures. I hope you have a really powerful camera.

I think needing to edit pictures is bad too. It's sort of frustrating to see pictures posted under "traditional art" when the only traditional element is the line art. Editing is sort of a necessary thing to me because you want the image to reflect the original one that you put out. Photoshop takes some getting used to but experimenting with it helps a lot.

So true.
it's just a normal camera. I think it has something to do with the lighting.
I really need to get better at editing..

KhaosWings In reply to LionesseRampant [2012-07-27 05:41:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

Normally when I'm doing a detailed portrait like this one I start with the darkest part of the image and work towards the lightest parts. With this one because of how dark the paper was I had to start with the lightest parts and work towards the darkest parts. It sounds weird but in a way I'm looking at it backwards from what I usually do
