Description Colored pencil 8.5"x11"

An illustration I did while interning at the Omaha Zoo. It was created for a sign to go near the wolf exhibit at the Wildlife Safari Park. It's a wolf skull, with a lovely view of the carnissals.

That shading is amazing! I love the use of blue hues near the darker areas

Yeah, skulls are so drearily achromatic so it was fun to do one in an explosion of colors. My instructors would discourage the use of black because of its tendency to dull colors so that deep blue/purple hue ended up serving as my "black" for the darkest of areas and areas needing contrast and definition.

That's good advice ^^ I might have to take that into consideration. This year for me in art is all about shading, light values, dark values, ect. You nailed the colors

Yeah, most scientific illustrations/photos of wolf skulls have the jaw shut, but this skull was meant to illustrate a wolf's dentition and bite power, so it was better open. Much better view of all those lovely, lovely teeth.
