Description FINALLY got fur on this guy. c:
Went out and got it yesterday, spent ALL. NIGHT. putting it on him tonight.

Right after I was done I scooted outside for a mini photo shoot. xD
I know I have probably done a bunch wrong, but I am still very proud. He feels very sturdy, and poses EXCELLENTLY. I can't wait to paint him.

this is a deer dragon for an art doll trade with *SweetSmoochy

Thanks. c:
I just got what I could at the fabric store. xD It looks better now, especially the neck fur, all brushed out.

Oh my gawd O-O I am loving this! Could you direct me to a tutorial on how to make these? I've seen a few similar dolls around yet can't find any tutorials on getting the sculpy to stay on the fabric so.

Khrests In reply to G1-Ratbat [2012-01-12 20:31:07 +0000 UTC]

No one makes tutorials. XD No one wants to give away the 'secrets' involved.

His sculpy is over tinfoil wrapped around a wire frame that runs through his entire body. c:
You make the frame, make the tinfoil base, sculpt the head/feet and bake it. then wrap it in stuffing and then put faux fur over top.

G1-Ratbat In reply to Khrests [2012-01-13 18:21:49 +0000 UTC]

O.O That sounds pretty easy OwO Thanks!

O.o So you bake it with the wire in the head and feet *ie in place already?

Cause I was considering putting holes in the "neck" of the clay *ie feet and head* and baking it, then sewing the fabric over using those needle holes in the clay. And of course gluing the fabric to the neck *trim any excess.

I was also considering using sand to give the plush some weight so say you make small animals like rodent's or kittens or like, well this, it'd feel like a real ferret But possible a layer of stuffing over the wire, sew the fur leaving a space just big enough to funnel in the sand and sewing up the rest?

It's a lot to consider. I always have trouble with the clay but the wire sound's like a good idea ^_^" Given I pad it enough that it doesn't rip out of the creation like the pipe cleaners in my "fin" arm warmers...

You are so helpful

It really depends on the kind of doll you want. xD
If you want a doll like I or :devCarn-Dearg make:, you want a wire frame. Sculpt right onto the wire, bake, and then put everything over the wire.

If you want a doll like =wereRemjiff you do it like you planned. Floppy bodied, you can't pose them. xD
I think the sand idea is a great idea! I think I did see one doll artist who did that... uhm.
*LisaToms uses sand I think. c:

You can wrap the stuffing around the wire. I like to use quilt badding, actually. xD and then I wrap it in string to give it the shape I want.
A lot of people connect with holes int he clay. but if you do holes also make holes in the tinfoil base you use, I would be afraid of the clay cracking under too much pull, you know? You also could bring a good gauge wire out the back, I suppose, and wrap it in a circle behind the head, close to the head, and pull the fabric around it by sewing it,t hen hot glue to the head to make it look nice. That would prolly work and be very sturdy. I can only speculate, I've only make wire frame dolls. xD

I so want to trade with you. ;o;

But my stuff is too cruddy, haha. oTL

Oh well, I guess. Either way, you do absolutely beautiful work. <3 It's very inspiring.

Thank you. <3

And your stuff isn't cruddy. xD I'm just putting trades on hold for now to try and sell a few dolls so I can buy better supplies. Maybe next time? <3

D'aww. xD Thanks.

I'd buy a doll from you, but I have no monies or a job with which to aquire any. ;o; Accursed economy. -fistshake-

But I'll be positive and use the time between now and when you open trades up again to make my stuff even better! |D Fwee~!

I wish you the absolutely best of luck with selling your dolls! ^-^

Thanks! c:

I feel bad pricing so high. xD I am going to adjust them, but they take sooo loong and fabric is SO expensive. It's why I do trades. C:

facecreep In reply to Khrests [2012-01-12 19:53:12 +0000 UTC]

You shouldn't feel bad. For recently starting, you do absolutely amazing work. <3 I'd be afraid to see how good you are in a year, haha.

If you have a Wal*Mart near you, I'd suggest digging through the remnants bin before you buy your fabric. I've found alot of really neat fabrics for a discount. And who doesn't love the rush of a great deal?

Khrests In reply to facecreep [2012-01-12 20:00:25 +0000 UTC]

Our walmart got rid of their 'craft' section. 8C
I just have a jo-anns, and their selection is horrid.

facecreep In reply to Khrests [2012-01-12 20:13:09 +0000 UTC]

Aww, that sucks! D:> -patpat- I've never been to a Jo-Anns though, so I'll have to take your word for it. Everything I get is from Wal*Mart, unfortunately. That's all we have within a couple hours' drive. -frowns at the state of Kansas-

Maybe I could send you some fabrics that I'm never going to get around to using. :U I've got tons of fleece, and some colorful faux fur that I can't think of anything to do with.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Khrests In reply to facecreep [2012-01-12 20:14:37 +0000 UTC]

I can't use fleece but I CAN use faux fur. oAo
If you can gather enough faux fur I'd be happy to make you a little doll in exchange for it. c: I had been considering the idea of trading dolls for fur already.

facecreep In reply to Khrests [2012-01-12 20:20:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah? 8D That would be wicked awesome! <3

I've got a couple of white rabbit pelts and some super pretty and fluffy sheep skin too, if you're interested in real fur also. (Most people aren't, I know, but it's a lot of fun to use for details.)

Either way, I'll gather up everything I've got when I get home and get some more if need-be. x3 I'm so excited, hehe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Khrests In reply to facecreep [2012-01-12 20:23:04 +0000 UTC]

If you will take pictures for me that would be awesome. <3
I would actually like to get my hands on some real fur. It would be exciting, I just need to get over my fear of touching it. lol!

But yes. <3 pictures, and then I can decide what doll size what you';re offering should add up to, and we can discuss more in detail!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

facecreep In reply to Khrests [2012-01-12 20:26:56 +0000 UTC]

Okey dokey. ^-^ That wouldn't be any problem at all. And the real fur is soooo soft. xD I cry a little inside every time I cut something up, because I just love petting it, haha.

Once I have what I would think to be enough for a trade, I will certainly send you the pictures. <3

Thanks so much! -squeals-

You just gather what you think you want to give up now, take a picture, and let me see. <3

I'm glad you like my dolls so much. xD

facecreep In reply to Khrests [2012-01-12 20:32:41 +0000 UTC]

M'kay. :3 Will do.

And I don't like your dolls, I'm pretty much in love with them. And I've been wanting a doll of an OC of mine for ages. ;o; And you would sculpt him so perfectly, I just /have/ to get you all kinds of goodies to make it worth your while. <3 (He's not complicated to make or anything, I promise! xD)

**Crappy drawing warning:**
[link]

That's him. xD The one and only Tiphor. His design has changed a little bit since then, but I don't have any recent drawings of him uploaded anywhere. oTL

But I don't see why you couldn't make him. :3 He's pretty simple, I think.

Khrests In reply to facecreep [2012-01-12 20:43:44 +0000 UTC]

Black fur for body, orange for the lames, and a bit of red for the markings. I'd sculpt the spike onto the end of his tail. xD
I have a black fur for the body, but don't have the orange or red. you may have some yourself? If not I will have to order online. c:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

facecreep In reply to Khrests [2012-01-12 20:49:46 +0000 UTC]

I certainly doooo~. Haha. I actually already have tried to make a Tiphor doll to quell myself, but it turned out like poop. I'm no good at that sort of thing.

But, I'll quit yapping, and go home to take a picture of everything for you. ^-^ I don't have the internet at home, so I'll be back again tomorrow around the same time, probably. Tomorrow's my birthday, so I gotta make sure the house is all tidy because my parents are visiting. Yay for presents! Haha.

Anyway, I'll talk to you later. Thanks again~!

Awesome! So yes, definitely if you have the fabric I can do him no problem.
You can just note me when you have the pictures. c:

Have fun, and happy birthday!

ah i see ;u;
wonderful <3
also about how much would a commissioned doll be roughly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Khrests In reply to Chocostars [2012-01-10 19:29:40 +0000 UTC]

Well. A mini like the fox as a custom is around $60-$70 but just a 'oh I want a simple -insertanimalhere-' that gives me some freedom with the fabric I already HAVE is only around $40. xD
Then the Gryphon is a good example of a fifteen inch doll. And he would be around a hundred dollars even. But this guy is a whopping twenty one inches long. He's around $140 usually. c:

But again, too. xD It depends on if it is going to be a simple custom, or complex custom, or if you just come up with something from fabric I have on hand.
