I just use my own helmet for reference :^) It's mirrored so the spectrum of shades that reflect in it has more contrast than a normal dark visor. The way it's curved makes everything reflect in vertical lines, you can't really see any distinct shapes unless they're super close and then they're really distorted. eg:
But again that's only mirrored visors. Dark ones will mostly only reflect light sources, not other objects.
I pretty much just do vertical stripes, light and dark, usually reflecting the surrounding colors.
