I bought an A4 sketchbook with yellow toned paper and I really enjoy it. Though it was kinda expensive and Oleg was a bit mad at me

I just bought a new square notebook with splendid white canvas covers but it looks so nice all unused I like to imagine rather than draw anything in there!  I am so used to cheap scraps of paper that a new book is like some thing from a museum or an exhibition! I have new Japanese watercolours that I bought like five years ago still unused as I like to see them all new I need some new oil colours though Paynes grey and burnt umber  they will get used soon enough

I use acryllics because oil paints have strong smell

that is very sensible for a small space Kathy I can paint on top of the washing machine with windows open at ground floor so the wind takes most of the smell away my mother painted fine portraits in oil paint but with a brush not a pallet knife that I use .. the problem with brushes is cleaning them all the time with turpentine increases the smell .. actually I quite like it but in small doses not to live with   its a smell that has a familiarity to it from student days also at polytechnic in England strange how some smells have an immediate association   your paintings are looking wonderful Kathy darling

I accidentally bought oil paints instead of acryllics and actually learnt one thing that saves my brushes till now - dishwashing soap ACTUALLY removes everything! And that it's often better to use your fingers to blend the paint on the canvas

aha! the dishwashing soap there must be like paint stripper! I wash brushes in thinners for cellulose paints and the dishwashing detergent is the final wash to make a brush good if I was doing a larger canvas then brushes would be better for sure they get washed in white spirits and detergent yes fingers are good to blend with but paint under the nails can be difficult to remove palette knifes are versatile and easy to clean  painting is like buttering bread! with colours ..

There's a joke in russian internet. Oil paints and butter are the same word in russian and when the painter tells what materials he used he says something like "canvas, butter"(yes, without "and", it's a rule). So someone took this picture:

and a note: "canvas, butter"

Russian jokes are strange, I know

thanks Kathy so wonderful this makes sense to me at least now that I know the Russian for oil paints is the same word as butter it is puzzling to me that in our 'Western Art World' I recently saw there was a banana taped to a screen/wall with a price tag of 68.000 English pounds on there for purchase it sold  .. also like they sent some establishment artists to the troubled areas of Palestine in recent years and the exhibit was a pin tack stuck in a wall are they demented lunatics performing for the oligarchs demonstrating the futile experience that is their lives I can get a banana at the store for a fraction of that art world price.. one time the Tate Gallery in London bought a pile of bricks neatly arranged into a block for many thousands pounds of public money what are are to make of this inaccessible art world  that is ultra exclusive for wealth only
this butter on a canvas will sell for many thousands roubles to the right collector!
