"Lucky, why?" Cadpig asked, large blue eyes shining with disbelief, "Why would you leave them like that? They're just puppies....and now that their mother's gone you shouldn't--"

"Don't tell me what I should or shouldn't do, Cadpig!" Lucky snapped, voice filled with a tortured rage. He knew the right choice to make--she could see it in those dark, dark pupils of his--but for some reason....he wasn't going to make it. "Please...." the dark-eared male continued "....for once in your life....just don't." Before she had a chance to respond, Lucky walked off, leaving his whimpering puppies to shiver in their bed. Alone. Cadpig looked from him, to the pups, then back to him before she sighed, and padded over to her young nieces and nephews. So what if they were inbred? They were still his puppies! Still part of his--this--family! They still deserved acknowledgment.

Still deserved love.

"There there, little ones" she crooned, giving the pups a nuzzle each. "It'll be okay. Auntie Cadpig is here...." She paused, eyes shifting back to the place her brother had been. First Two-Tone....now Lucky, too? Why? Why couldn't her siblings just act like the responsible adults they were raised to be? Why had everything fallen apart?

Another sigh, and the blue-eyed dalmatian lowered her head, smiling sadly at the puppies. Their parents may have disowned them, but that didn't mean she had to.

"....and I won't leave you alone anymore."

This piece was inspired by a conversation with regarding Cadpig's position in this story. Because their parents didn't want them, Cadpig (and Tripod in turn) stationed themselves as the puppies' surrogate parents; naming them, raising them, and loving them.

I feel bad for Cadpig, really, that I've given her such a depressing adulthood. First her surrogate pups (most of them) get put down, then she miscarries two of her own pups....the poor thing. At least she's got Tripod.

Speaking of Cadpig: she is really really REALLY irritating to draw. Especially as an adult. Not that I don't like how this turned out (although I think her head is too small) but it was so diiiiiifficult!
