Description "Dear princess celestia, today I learned how to write letters without spike's help."

Tried a completely new way of painting. I like it.

I really like the background, though the objects stick out.
Look at the brightness of the books, then the brightness of the ground the books are lying on. The vast difference makes them stick out, as if they were hovering above the ground. The same goes for Twilight, and it's hard to make out how exactly the candles are connected to the ground.
As for the shading, candles don't burn in a bright white. Tone down the highlights, make the light more dim, and give it some red-yellow tint. Also, try make the magic aura more brighter, and give it a bit of a glow to make it stick out more.
Lastly, for the anatomy, two things: your necks and torsos are still too big in relation to the torso, and the flank, or rather, the tail, looks really odd. You might wanna do some sketch lines to confirm the basic proportions before starting to color it.

I realize the contrast is too high on some items, and my monitor is too bright, so the blackness of the ground didn't look so black until I flipped it to my second monitor.
Keep the highlight brightness, using the full range of value is incredibly important. Simply lighten things up, increase shadow contrast, make it pop more, make it softer, NOT darken it. And yes, the candle flame color does not match up with the emitted light.
Neck is long, its always long, I fail at this. I spent probably five times as long on the rump then anywhere else, couldn't get it to look right. And yes, I actually do undersketch- [link] ... Actually three or four undersketches per picture (that's why that one looks so clean).

Yeah, it's important to not go overboard with the darkest tones, but candles are very dim. Also, consider that any spots blocked off the only light source receive practically no illumination whatsoever.
