Description
A modern destroyer, entering late in the war, the Nordwind-class was well-equipped with sensor systems, including active sonar and radar. Armed with six 128mm dual-purpose guns, four 55mm AAA, eight 30mm machine cannon in twin and 18 20mm in triple mounts, as well as four torpedo tubes and depth-charges, these vessels were well-rounded designs. What made them stand-apart was the helicopter pad and hangar for the Focke-Achgelis AG-223 helicopter. Used as a scout or anti-submarine platform, this aircraft extended range and capability of the fleet tremendously.
Being aware that four torpedo tubes were insufficient for a destroyer, the designers added them nonetheless to fire Zaunkönig acoustic-homing torpedoes to attack detected submarines.
