Do you have a headcanon for what ethnicities the Pokémon anime characters are?
I do~! It kinda bothers me how in the West we just kinda assume that all anime characters are white just because they’re light skinned. If the setting is in Japan, or the area is based on Japan, I personally like to think the characters are Japanese.
- Satoshi is Okinawan
- Kasumi is quarter Japanese/three quarters Caucasian
- Takeshi is Filipino/Japanese (half-half)
- Musashi is Japanese
- Kojiro is Japanese/Caucasian (half-half)
- Other characters (not depicted)
- Haruka and Masato are Japanese
- Hikari is Japanese/Korean
- Iris is Jamaican
- Dento is Caucasian
- Serena is Caucasian
- Citron and Eureka are Caucasian
- Lillie is Caucasian
- Kaki is Hawaiian
- Mao is Tahitian
- Suiren is Japanese
- Mamane is Mongolian
- Yamato is Japanese/Caucasian
- Kosaburo is Japanese/Chinese

Kasumi can also be part Mongolia or Russian, since they also have a 10% chance like scottish people, being born with red hair. ^^
To me, Takeshi always was a pure japanese, cause asians are not full white. Many of them have natural dark skin such as chinese, Koreans, North/East Russian and japanese. There is a youtuber named Sherliza Moe. She is full asian and her body colour changes from white to extremely dark, depending how long she is ooutside and how long she is inside. I think it was the beginning of her Colorism in Asia video.

Now that I look at it, Kasumi does seem to be part Irish what with the red hair and green eyes

I think Misty is the only one I ever really assumed was completely Caucasian like thinking Misty is Scottish or Irish (she looks/dresses/acts a lot like my Scottish friend so I just picture her as Scottish). I always pictured James as having some Caucasian, his dad just looks English to me. I think with the anime style that the show uses anyone can really be interpret it as anything, but the whole thinking EVERYONE IS WHITE is just not plausible. Ash I always figured was Japanese, and Brock.

Yeah, I can definitely see that. Wouldn't think of them as American personally. If anything it's there own thing, Kantonese (Which I feel might be a real thing but I'm not sure)

Usagi is from Okinawa and has sun-bleached hair
Ami is from Hokkaido
Rei is Japanese
Makoto is half White (Australian) and Half Japanese
Minako is half Japanese, half Grecian
Mamoru is Japanese
Chibiusa is Half Japanese, Half Okinawan.
Setsuna is Indo-Japanese
Michiru is Korean
Haruka is Half Japanese, Half Kiwi (someone from New Zealand is a Kiwi)
And Hotaru is Japanese/Chinese.
