Kumo was lucky his stick was made of some of the hardest wood known to Wyngrew with the way he was gripping it. Maybe if he had claws like a Tickwook he’d have made some grooves in it as he crunched along in the fallen leaves after the Coatala he was following. Maybe she had found a trail for his runeboo, Jam? The blue ‘gro tried to keep his hopes up as he made little clicking noises with his tongue, the same ones that usually called his trusty pet to his side.

So caught up was he in his furtive glancing and clicking, he nearly ran shins-first into the Coat he’d been following. The brindled creature had stopped short, crouched in an aggressive stance and growling deep in her throat at some particularly deep shadows beyond a low bush. Kumo strained to hear beyond the Coat’s growls, trying to catch wind of anything. A bark? A whimper maybe? Or if it wasn’t a pet, possibly a hiss or-

Kwah! Kweh-uuuuuoooooo! The pained whining of a runeboo finally found Kumo’s ears, but before he could process anything or connect the dots, another sound met him, then another. Terrified Ori screeching, yowling Coats, Wibbles warking in pain, all one after the other in a symphony of horror. Chilling enough to cause the normally brave creature Kumo had been following to turn right around and bolt, leaving the blue Wyngro with only a stick to defend himself from the shambling horror pushing its way through the undergrowth towards him.

Kindrin. Luckily only the one, but its mocking calls of injured pets made it sound like so many more. It advanced on the stunned ‘gro, savoring the waves of fear rushing off of him as its weird ear-arms reached forward.

Something in Kumo flipped, and he went from Freeze to Fight just before he was within arm’s reach of the thing. He lashed out with the knobbed end of his stick, hitting the spite’s hand with a satisfying whack and causing it to snarl in what looked like impatience. Could spites be impatient? Kumo tried not to think on that question too hard as the OTHER ear-hand came swiping at him claws-first, narrowly missing his nose.

Too close! He swung his stick again as he leaned away, trying to get his fear-frozen hooves to move, Chiidammit! One moved suddenly as he thought this, making him turn a little too quickly and stumble as he tried to book it out of there. He knew he couldn’t fight a Kindrin. He shouldn’t even try! He should call for help! And he did, regret lancing his mind as he realized a bit late he shouldn’t have come looking for Jam alone with only a Bow-tree bough as his defense. No magic, nothing that flashes, just his voice and a flicking stick.

Kumo stumbled as he ran, tripping again on an upturned tree root and thudding to the ground. His stick skidded out of his grasp, and the spite finally caught up to him as he was trying to crawl towards it. The stick was in his paw, though, when the Kindrin caught him by his leg and lifted him into the air. Kumo flailed madly, smacking the bizarre arms and head of the monster as it held him above its head. He also swore, loudly, wildly, almost screeching in hopes of somegro, ANYGRO finding him before it was too late.

In his mad flailing, the end of his stick jabbed itself into one of the bulbous black eyes of the beast that held him, causing it to make an odd hissing screech and drop him back onto the grass. Winded for a moment, Kumo let out a cough and scrambled to his feet in preparation to run again on weak knees.

WHAM

A hastily swung claw sent Kumo into a tree, where he was stunned for far longer than was comfortable when you’re in the middle of a fight. A searing pain ripped its way through where the claw had caught him in the side, and when Kumo checked it with his paw it came away red and slick with blood.

“F-Flick!” He swore breathlessly, holding his stick out like it was a sword as the Kindrin advanced on him once again. “No! No no nono flick- ow!” was tacked on as he tried to get up and found that his ankle wouldn’t support him. This was it, he was going to be ripped apart by a Kindrin and he’ll never find Jam--

“KUMO!” A familiar voice broke through the fog of adrenaline as Karv and the rest of the Arcane Jams ripped through the brush into the clearing where his struggle was happening. Mirror visibly paled as she saw what exactly had been making Kumo scream before.

“G-guys, be careful!” Kumo shouted, trying fruitlessly again to stand up as the Kindrin rounded on the newcomers to its personal dinner party. Karv let out a growl as his magic glands lit up with green magic, hurling a couple good-sized stones into the weird little pin-head of the spite and drawing another hissing screech. One after the other, the rest of the group started to gang up on the spite, throwing magic and rocks until it retreated back into the shadows, deciding too many ‘gros was too much of a hassle to attempt any further tortures. As the spite bailed, Lackadaisy and Karv came to either side of Kumo.

“Are you hurt?” the brown quad asked, concern further creasing her face as the blue biped grimaced and nodded. “Can you show me then?”

“Oh- flick, Kumo!” Karv cut in before Kumo could reply, pulling the blue ‘gro’s paw away from the shredded-looking injury in his side. He almost sounded disappointed in him.

“Ow hey! C-careful, Karv, ugh-” Kumo protested, trying once again to get up in order to possibly escape the mothering from both of the quads. But again, just like the last time, his ankle gave out, sending him toppling forward into an unsightly heap on his face. Despite the tense situation, a small titter ran through the rescue party, and despite Kumo’s pouting as he was lifted onto Karv’s back, he couldn’t restrain a little giggle himself.

“Let’s get you to Dr. F..” Mirror sighed out as she patted the somewhat sulky Gro’s shoulder. “He’ll fix you up.”

“And then!” Trix piped up, picking up Kumo’s savior stick, pointing the knob end at him. “You can tell us why you decided to go looking around alone, in the woods, during Warptide.” Kumo’s face and ears burned with shame and embarrassment as Karv started to move the group out of the woods.
