Caterpillar of the Zygaenidae moth. Note the small hydrogencyanide (HCN) droplets on body and spines.

Thank god its colouration would mean I wouldn't want to eat it (not that I go around eating caterpillars - just if we had to, I wouldn't pick this!)

Neither would I. But, likewise, I also wouldn't go for the boring brown ones either. They can look pretty disgusting, too. I'd probably go for all-green ones. At least if you mix them in with some lettuce you'd hardly notice them.
