Description

AKA: John C. Reilly dealing with monsters before going to Skull Island.

Yes, that's actually John C. Reilly playing a medieval king who wants to slay a "sea monster" so that her queen (played by Salma Hayek) can eat its heart and become pregnant. John is a really good actor when he's in more serious films.

Anyway, this is fan art of 2015 Tale of Tales, a fantasy film from italian director Matteo Garrone that adapts some old fairy tales sticking to their more brutal and gruesome aspects (contrary to what many people believe, originally fairy tales weren't meant for children or supposed to teach morals, at their inception they were a popular form of entertainment in rural villages among adults, and they may be very graphic or not-PC because surprisingly enough, back then people didn't have TV shows or videogames).

Personally, I believe Tale of Tales shows you how you do a "dark fairy tale thing" right, by simply staying faithful to the earlier versions. The only changes you should apply is to fix the plot here and there to make it more consistently written if necessary, but the stuff that is bloody or fucked up KEEP IT. There's a reason why the movie is rated R lol

I really liked this sequence because of the way it plays out, the king puts on an anachronistic deep diving suit, slowly walks underwater, it's a murky and unfocused limbo, then he reaches this practical effect axolotl-like dragon while it sleeps, and the encounter between the two is quiet, claustrophobic and silently brutal when shit hits the fan.

If the movie was directed by someone else, let's say Robert Zemeckis or even worse Guy Ritchie, the scene would be way different, it'd have a lot of silly and over the top edits and quick cuts when the king suits up like an Ash Williams wannabe, the music would be over the top and then "BWAAAAMMM!!! THE GIANT FUCKING DRAGON COMES OUT AND ROARS WHILE CGI WATER AND LIGHTNINGS ARE EVERYWHERE! IT'S ALL SPARKLY AND LOUD!!! AND THEN CGI PG-13 BLOOD RAINS DOWN!!"

...Yeah, being more subtle and nuanced instead of dumb and excessive can work wonders, I recommend this movie.
